Blue Peter launches ‘Design a TARDIS Console’ competition

October 7th, 2009

bp-andy-akinwolereLast month, we told you about Blue Peter’s plans to host a brand new Doctor Who competition, and all of its details were revealed when it was officially launched on tonight’s instalment of the programme!

The CBBC show has invited its viewers to design a brand new TARDIS console that will be used in an episode of the upcoming fifth series.

They ask that the design includes everyday household objects to tie in with the plot of the single story in which it is to be featured. The winner will be chosen by Matt Smith, who will be playing the Doctor when the series returns to our screens next year.

And if that wasn’t enough, one lucky winner from each of the three different age group categories will get to travel down to Cardiff and spend an entire day with the cast and crew!

Also a member of the judging panel is Doctor Who’s production designer Edward Thomas. He was on hard earlier to offer some of his own helpful tips to anybody who is interested in entering…

“Don’t come along with a design that’s finished and too technical - it needs to have a lot of character,” he said. “It’s about being clever with what you find around the house and make sure it really feels as if the Doctor has put it together.”

“This is the latest in a long line of collaborations between Blue Peter and Doctor Who,” continued Blue Peter’s editor, Tim Levell. “We know our viewers absolutely love Doctor Who and we hope to be blown away by the originality and creativity of their concepts.”

He added: “Doctor Who prides itself on surprising its viewers at every turn and who better than a child to come up with the latest design of the TARDIS console.”

The closing date for entries will be 2nd November 2009. You can find out more about the competition – and print off the hexagonal template for the console – over at the BBC’s official Blue Peter website, here. For any of you who will be entering – good luck!

Ooooh. Sounds interesting. :P Wondering how this will tie in with the plot? Most likely when Matt Smith is choosing a new TARDIS interior – browsing through a selection? I’m wondering about entering this one… :D

I really really dislike this idea. The last thing Blue Peter viewers designed was the Abzorbaloff, which was the basis for the worst episode of new Who ever! Despite that, it could be that we end up with a real gem. In which case I will be proved wrong, but I very much doubt it.

I disliked Love & Monsters, but the Abzorbaloff itself wasn’t all that a bad idea. It was just a bad ep. :( I’m kinda glad they limited it to under 12s, otherwise I would have made myself have a go and completely embarrassed myself with my lack of drawing skills. :P
