Discussion: The Mad Woman in the Attic (Part II)
The concluding part of this week’s Sarah Jane adventure, The Mad Woman in the Attic, has just finished airing on BBC1/BBC HD, and what better way to end your week than by having your say in our episode discussion!?
The latest episode saw alien Eve’s powers grow out of control, with everyone caught in her sinister and endless games, and the danger extended all the way to the year 2059…
And to get us all even more excited about the Tenth Doctor’s anticipated arrival on Bannerman Road next week, viewers were also treated to a flash-forward featuring our beloved Doctor himself!
Feel free to leave your thoughts about tonight’s episode in a comment on this post, and, as always, watch out for spoilers, and click here to check out our episode guide for The Mad Woman in the Attic!
Don’t forget to join us next Thursday and Friday at 5PM for our episode discussions for episodes 5 and 6, The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith! He is returning, he is coming back… and we can’t wait! Let the countdown commence!

I was a bit sad … know we know that Rani does make it out of the advantures OK … I don’t mean that I want her to die … but when there’s big cliff-hangers when the characters are in danger … we know that she isn’t (and I think she knows too).

Allora, review time!
Can I first say that I loved Eve as an alien. I particularly loved her costume – she reminded me a little of Jabe from DW 1.2, and I do take a shine to those aliens who so clearly share a common ancestor with us (I like to think that’s the Time Lords). I loved the use of the colour red. Red has such negative connotations, but they turned it right round and made Eve a child. When Adam’s eyes flashed red in the last AU sequence and the older Rani reacted with delight, I grinned. “So there, Miss B (last year’s English teacher)! You wouldn’t accept that red can also mean love and passion and warmth, and I really hope you’ve suddenly taken to watching children’s television!”
On the downside was the AU narrative itself. Well, actually, I’m going to contradict myself immediately because I thought it worked brilliantly as a narrative device, but I thought that the turning point that led to it was a little weak. I’d much rather have had Rani do something rather more dramatic than that one little remark which was picked up on in /the next episode/. They stretched it out too thin, in my opinion, but this is me being picky.
Overall, I much preferred this story to Prisoner of the Judoon. It’s much more character based, as a first episode never is, and it also toned down the overdone morals just a tad. They were still very much in evidence, but not so explicitly stated for the sixtieth time in ten minutes.
As for next week… I’m not sure. Obviously I can’t wait for the Doctor to visit (find me someone who can!) and I love anything with Luke, so his little clip of ‘What do I call him? Dad?’ was a great teaser for me, but I’m not quite so certain that the story will be anything that we can’t predict right at this very moment. I do hope that they’ve added a few twists that we won’t see coming.
And on an even more depressing note, I’m in Malta next week, and therefore can’t participate in this discussion. In fact, I won’t even see the episodes until Sunday at the earliest. Pity me, pity me. Though on the bright side, it’ll be interesting to be able to watch them both together, rather than having to wait a day.
A bientôt!
Hmmmm not a great story but ok. Very confusing what they were trying to do but generally episodes 3 & 4 of SJA are not the best ones (just like Eye of the Gorgon and Day of the Clown) but I think they will make up for it with next weeks epic stories!
Admin, I was just wondering if you’d noticed that on the menu bar on the right, the links to these discussions haven’t been activated. It just struck me.
