Russell promises ‘terrifying and manic’ Master
In a brand new interview released by The Flintshire Chronicle today, Russell T Davies talks about why it made perfect sense to bring the Master back for the Tenth Doctor’s final adventure.
“He’s Moriarty to Sherlock Holmes, he’s black to the Doctor’s white,” he said. ”He’s an obvious equal and nemesis, and easily understandable.”
He continued: ”But we’ve got a very different Master this time. He’s back, but he’s dying, so he’s savage and bitter, but powerless too. He has no TARDIS, and he’s stuck looking like the old Prime Minister, so he can’t even walk down the street! He’s in a lowly position for someone who was once a lord of time, and that makes him tragic. Until he does the most unspeakable things you’ve ever seen at Christmas time, then you’ll be booing and shouting at the screen.”
Speaking about the scale of The End of Time, the outgoing showrunner teased: “You wait. Just you wait. They’re going to be amazing. We’ve been working on this for a long time and we’ve only just finished them, and I’m so happy with it.”
He finished: “I wouldn’t change a thing and I can’t wait for you all to see them.”

Hadn’t thought about that – him looking like Harold Saxon. Or the powerlessness. Oh my goodness, I’m actually going to feel sorry for the Master, if only for the briefest moment!
