Billie hints at Doctor Who movie?
Billie Piper appeared on Radio 1 earlier today where she spoke to Sara Cox about her time as Rose Tyler. During the interview she added yet more fuel to the fire regarding a possible Doctor Who film!
The actress said: “Well, I’ve heard that they’re doing it and that they want David to do it, but I think he’s slightly anxious that there’ll be big American producers on board and that they’ll try and hijack the whole thing and cast someone like Johnny Depp.”
However, she cooly denied that she would be appearing in it herself, labelling her sudden outbreak of laughter as ‘a nervous twitch’, before insisting: “I don’t know!”
A movie has been on the cards for years now, however the rumours were rekindled last May when ‘DR WHO – THE MOVIE’ briefly appeared on the agency profile for Russell T Davies, and then, a week later, BBC Films announced that the script for a feature-length adventure was ’in development’. Does Billie know more than she’s letting on? Make of it what you will!

Nooooooo!!!!!! If there is a movie, please not with David Tennant! He is not the current Doctor Who!!!!!
I’m not sure personally, there’s been such denial from the BBC over the subject, which doesn’t necessarily mean that it isn’t happening behind the scenes, but it makes me doubt the rumours a bit. I know Billie has said here that they’re doing it, but it could just be rumour taken as fact or whatever.
If they were to do a movie, it’s difficult because I can understand why people wouldn’t want a Doctor that has regenerated to do the movie, but at the same time, I seriously wouldn’t be interested in seeing a movie with Matt Smith in it, no matter how far in the future we were talking. It’s nothing personal, I haven’t seen his Doctor properly, it’s something about him that in a movie I just wouldn’t connect with.
It’s all a waiting game. Either they’re doing it and they’ll announce it eventually, or they’re not doing it and we’ll only hear continued rumours.
I’d love to see a Doctor Who movie. I never saw the ‘96 one (well, I was three at the time) and it would be interesting to see how they made the format work for a feature-length production. I can’t remember which writer it was said that writing a two-parter was essentially like writing a film, but I don’t believe them, whoever it was. There are certain things you expect from films that you don’t from TV, and vice versa. I have no idea how successfully DW would be transported from the small screen to the big.
Whether they make one or not, I agree with Tennant’s concern that American producers will try to hijack it. Because they will.
If there is a DW movie it should be done by the BBC, or at least someone remotely associated with the UK.
Yes, I am a little bitter about Americans taking British ideas. And I’m American so it’s alright if I say these things, right? :P
I think I am half and half on this idea of a movie, whilst it would be amazing to see David as Ten again, would it ruin the whole regeneration and put Matt’s Doctor in the shade? Hopefully if they were thinking about a movie it would stay British, the other Eighth Doctor movie was American wasnt it? And it was ok, but not as good as any of the British Who. I also wonder what they would even do it about, all the companions have drifted away so I’m unsure what they would put into it anyway. We’ll have to wait and see I suppose :D
When it was speculated that a movie was in development, RTD denied it and said that the person who edited his page over at The Agency did so due the increase in rumours, rather than as an actual confirmation.
I doubt there will be a movie. I doubt the BBC could afford it. If there is a movie, it will be a similar vain to the 1960’s version where Doctor Who is a human who invented a time ship and paid for by outside interests. If they are going to cast anyone, I would think you would be looking at an action hero figure or someone like Max Beesley.
