Children of the TARDIS Revolution?

February 15th, 2010

sylvester-mccoySylvester McCoy has found himself at the centre of controversy this week after revealing that Doctor Who writers set out to bring down the reign of Margaret Thatcher during his time on the show back in the 1980s.

The Seventh Doctor actor told The Guardian of the BBC’s alleged use of propaganda in the series, which they hoped would spark up opposition against Thatcher, who was at this time serving as Britain’s first ever female Prime Minster.

“We were young, politically-motivated and it seemed the right thing to do,” McCoy explained. “Our feeling was that Margaret Thatcher was far more terrifying than any monster the Doctor had encountered.”

However, the BBC have since issued an official statement in which they deny the claims, labelling his revelation as “strange”. Stay tuned!

Strange thing about all this was JNT and Thatcher almost had a parallel career. Thatcher bringing down the country. JNT bringing down Doctor Who. Can’t remember now who won!!! :)

I find this, in my wasn’t-there attitude, quite amusing. Doctor Who has the potential to be very political; the sheer size of the audience must be a huge factor in that. And if you take the idea of politics with a small ‘p’, then arguably it still is political on the homophobia/racist front.

Sorry about that, Mass. The original article had to be reposted because of technical difficulties, which is why your first comment has disappeared.
