Odeon reconsider Alice in Wonderland boycott

February 25th, 2010

eleventh-doctor-januaryThose of you who have been following the news will no doubt be aware that earlier this week Odeon UK confirmed that they would be boycotting Alice in Wonderland following a disagreement with Disney over its imminent DVD release.

Of course, this was very bad news, not only for fans of Twidledum and Tweedledee, but also for Whovians alike, because the recently released Series 5 promo was to be previewed in 3D before showings of the Tim Burton film.

However, there’s good news for all concerned today, because, after a series of crisis talks, the boycott has been reconsidered! This means you’ll now be able to catch the Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond (and the feature film itself, of course!) in all their 3D glory in Odeon cinemas across the UK from 5th March! You’d be a Mad Hatter to miss it!

The trailer will also be shown before the movie in other chains of cinemas across the country.

    thats a bit confusing:

    “Odeon UK confirmed that they would be boycotting Alice in Wonderland following a disagreement with Disney over its imminent DVD release.”

    What do the dvds of the film got to do with the cinema. Thats just baffled me.

    oh well. least i will get to see two of my favourite things. Dr who and a tim burton film on the same screen

    @pirko
    Odeon have been claiming that people will just buy the DVD rather than go to the cinema, and hence they’ll lose money. Disney have responded by pointing out that 97% of ticket sales are in the first 8 weeks of a run, and they want to release the DVD after 12 weeks, when they would normally wait 17 (which seems a random kind of number to me).

    Anyway, my local cinema isn’t Odeon, so I never had to worry! :P

    Odeon Cinema are just another profiteering company that, like the Banks. are throwing their dolls out of the pram because they aren’t getting their own way! It strange to me as a lot of the time, films are released in America on DVD before they even arrive here. So people with Multi region DVD’s could end up watching it on TV first anyway (I will point out that,obviously, it is not true of every film!)
    Another point, which is obvious to me, is that audiences who want to go to the cinema, would still go even if the DVD is out already!

    *Sighs* I remember the days when we all just used VHSs, which we just called ‘videos’… I still refuse to get my boxsets in Bluray format, just because when I move out next year, I will not have enough money for a Bluray player. Does that make me out of date?
