Benedict Cumberbatch hints at Doctor Who role?
Benedict Cumberbatch has opened a brand new kettle of speculation (just in case we Whovians needed anything else to ponder over!) by suggesting he’s in talks for a role in Doctor Who.
The actor, who plays the protagonist in the forthcoming BBC drama, Sherlock, written, coincidentally, by Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, told DigitalSpy that he’s a huge fan of the series, cryptically avoiding to divulge whether or not he’ll be appearing in the future.
“Not [in] an episode of Doctor Who, no,” he said (a clue he’ll be appearing in more than one?). “It’s something that hasn’t really crossed my mind that much, but I’m a huge fan of the series and amazing people do amazing work in it, in all episodes. I’m going to keep my powder dry for now. As I said before, not an episode.”
When asked if he’d ever consider being the Doctor, he replied: “Maybe.”

No, that’s STILL an opinion…
I’ve been there since the beginning in 1963 (well all right, I was 2 years old…) and I couldn’t disagree with you more. (And I’ve loved all ten previous Doctors – this is the only one I’ve ever had issues with…)
@TheHornet
Then I’m quite baffled, unless you just don’t like the fact he’s so young, as he’s been completely right as the Doctor, as far as I can see. Each to their own. But he nailed it for me, completely.
@TWWL
I’ll admit a large part is that he looks too young, although I never had that issue with Peter Davison. I actually think Matt Smith looks about 19 years old (the actors in Merlin look much older…)
However, I just don’t rate his acting ability, sorry! It’s like I’ve spotted the strings on a puppet, I can’t believe in what he’s doing, because I can see all too clearly how he’s doing it.
That too may be partly due to his youthful appearance. He reminds me too much of watching a school play – he’s earnest enough, 10 out of 10 for dedication, but it just doesn’t seem real.
Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t much older, but by contrast I found his perfomance as Sherlock mesmirising. THAT’S what I want from the Doctor and Matt Smith doesn’t deliver.
@TWWL
“Smith is actually much closer to the doctor we had in the original run of the show, that IS a fact”
No, that is an opinion. Every fan has different ideas of what the doctor should be like and how he should act. I’m sure Terry Nation didn’t have set rules about how the doctor who be apart from eccentric and 900 years worth of timelord knowledge.
I’ll be honest I didn’t really like Eccleston’s Doctor, I much preferred Tennants as he was more eccentric, funny, dark and emotional which are things I PERSONALLY think suit the doctor.
Do I think Matt Smith has these? Yes! Deffo but he is a much different version of the doctor, so sorry there are no set rules about how the doctor should be.
Matt Smith is a much closer version of the doctor in YOUR opinion
@pirko
You’ve decided to pick at me a couple of times recently, what with this and the ‘don’t cry’ comment. Stop it please, it’s silly.
Also, Terry Nation, I’m afraid, did not create the series or the character of The Doctor. Terry Nation created The Daleks.
