Matt Smith describes Elisabeth Sladen as “royalty”
Home Media Magazine chatted to Matt Smith at Comic Con, and during the interview he discussed his memories of working with Elisabeth Sladen, who passed away in April.
The actor made a guest appearance as the Doctor in Series 4 of The Sarah Jane Adventures, and has said that he will remember the late actress for her “great grace”. “She was like royalty,” he explained. “What’s incredible about Lis is she actually meant something to three generations, to kids back in the 70s and 80s, to kids now and to adults now.”
He continued: “I think that’s a remarkable feat and a testament to Elisabeth Sladen. She had great grace and a great sense of youthfulness about her, which I have not seen in many people. It’s a tragedy, a real sad day for everyone associated with Doctor Who.”

Three months on and I still can’t quite believe that she’s gone. She was a true hero. And I’m not just saying that because everybody else is, I’m saying it because I really mean it. I haven’t seen her in the earlier episodes. I haven’t even seen her that much in the Sarah Jame Adventures. But still, she made such a lasting impression.
My best wishes go to the friends and relative of this true British legend. Thank you, Lis.
She was beyond amazing. There never was and never will be anyone like her again. I was worried that I might be dissapointed when I met her since they say never meet your heroes. But I wasn’t at all. In fact, I was enchanted all over again if not moreso. She had such a LOVE for life and people that you couldn’t help but smile when in her presence. With a line of 500 plus people waiting for her autograph she made me feel like I was the only one in the room. I’ll never forget her.
