Steven Moffat has admitted that he’d only consider bringing Captain Jack back to Doctor Who if the plot required it.

While John Barrowman has been open about his desire to return to the series, the showrunner has told TVLine that it all depends on the circumstances of the story. “When we’ve got a good story, we’ll do it,” he said. “You can’t just bring somebody back and say, ‘That’s a story’. It’s not, ‘How do you bring Captain Jack back?’. I’ll be thinking, ‘You know what this needs? We need to bring Jack back for it’.”

He goes on to reveal that it was only John’s priorities on Miracle Day that stopped Jack from making a comeback in A Good Man Goes to War. He added: “I’d have brought him back, because it would be obvious for him to call upon Jack in those circumstances.”

    If the reports are correct that Series 5 of Torchwood might not happen right away, I’d imagine Barrowman will be available for Season 7 of Doctor Who, or the 50th anniversary.

    @Alex
    Preferably Series Eight/the Fiftieth Anniversary so Torchwood: Series Five can air next year and Jack would have a real reason to return to Doctor Who.

    I know Moffat would never bring back most of the old companions but if the Doctor would be willing to give Jack a call, wouldnt he also feel like getting Martha and Mickey and people like that on his side?

    Does he mean to say that we could have had a River/Jack meeting after all? I just *need* that to happen. Saying that, I think AGMGTW had enough going on without reintroducing Jack to 11. Save it for the anniversary. We can be fairly sure that if Moffat wants a good story, he’ll think of one!

    I am SO looking forward to the moment Jack is reintroduced to the Doctor. They have always had such a great bond. And as was already mentioned, it would be quite intriguing to see captain Jack meet River Song… I can already hear the dialogue in my head…
    I just hope everything goes well for both DW and Torchwood and John Barrowman doesn’t suddenly disappear to some faraway country doing God knows what. You know, with this kind of projects it’s all about timing and bringing the right people together at the right moment.
