Rate & Discuss: End of the Road

Jack faces a showdown with a man he thought long since dead, while Rex takes extreme action. But is it too late to prevent the collapse of society?
Episode 7’s cliffhanger meant terrible times for Jack, as he faced the End of the Road…
Of course, it’s not really the end just yet, as we’ve still got two episodes to go, but things are definitely building up to a huge finale, and, if the latest episode is anything to go by, it is going to be huge! But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves! Back to Episode 8…
This instalment saw Rex take extreme action (which is so unlike him!), as society began to collapse, and Jack was reunited with an impossible face from his past. Was it too late?
What did you think of Episode 8 of Miracle Day? Loved it? Hated it? You know what to do!

Cool episode. The first few episodes almost made me stop watching but I’m glad I continued.
I like the rhythm and pacing these past couple episodes had. I’ll be patiently awaiting for some answers next ep.
Wow! that was really face-paced! also having charlotte wells as a member of one of the families was a big shock, i did not see that coming! Cant wait till next wekk, it’s all coming together now! :)
Great episode want it to be next week,OMG poor Jack!!!
That was awesome, just finished watching it online as it wont air in New Zealand for 2 months :( So with the morphic field panel thingy, i think it stoped angelo from dieing before the miracle, so when everything reversed, It made him possible to die.
Brilliant episode, but still expecting John’s episode and Russell and Jane’s finale to be better. So the three families are definitely alien, Jack’s been shot, Gwen deported and Esther and Rex are both in trouble once again. This series is actually getting better, even if it’s at the final hurdle. Hopefully, if there is a fifth series, Russell stays on and Jane returns to write.
I have always been a fan of Doctor Who & I loved the torchwood spinoff series both 1 & 2 along with children of earth & I always acknowledged Jacks sexuality. But Im not impressed at all by this new series & Ill tell you why, the first three series’s focused on what the show is “supposed” to be about scifi & the alien threat in which torchwood was originally formed for. However this new series seems to be hell bent on ramming the homesexuality of the supposed bisexual Jack down peoples throats! There is no real point in having Jack play apart in the series other than obviously trying to bed more or less every guy that he comes into contact with. The strongest character in the series is Gwen, and again it is a SCI FI show, I have nothing against homosexuality, each to their own, but if I wanted to watch a gay porn movie Id rent one out, not turn the tv on to watch a supposed scifi show to do so…….It really pains me to say it but Im really dissapointed with this series compared to the previous ones & I dont think its coinsidence that the ratings have dipped at the same time some poeple are complaining. I think they should call it a day after this series & let John Burrowman stick to his saturday night surprise surprise show. Just hope the BBC dont make the same mistake with Doctor Who as Ive heard little chinese whispers about problems with production & cut backs along with ratings conserns……Personally Ill be very surprised to see Torchwood return & Im not expecting a full Doctor Who series next year either, they will try & build up anticipation & budget with limited Who next year for something special in 2013 for the 50th anniversary.
@JASON MARTIN
Steven’s already confirmed that a full thirteen episode series will air next year. There’s most likely going to be fundraising going on for Series Eight or whatever they’re doing in 2013, like Julie did to raise money for The Waters of Mars to even exist.
To be honest, the only reason Torchwood’s become a little more “sexual” is because it’s broadcast on Starz which, as a premium channel, can afford to show nudity and sex in their shows such as Camelot and The Pillars of the Earth. However, it’s not like every episode has contained a sex scene. Only two episodes have and they were small parts of the episodes they featured in. Also, the series has still been science fiction, especially the second half which is pretty much all about the alien intervention that caused Miracle Day.
I do agree with you about the ratings, although I think that’s mainly because casual viewers wouldn’t really give Miracle Day a chance because the first four episodes were just “average” as opposed to “brilliant” like Episodes Five to Eight.
That was certainly the best episode of Miracle Day so far. We are FINALLY seeing some obvious alien involvement and actual danger for our principal cast members. I loved the twists (especially Charlotte) and the fact that the plot is deeply connected to Jack and Torchwood! Also, the idea that the 2008 crash was the work of sinister aliens made me smile…
@TE
In my opinion, it’s not that Starz can afford to show nudity, but that they feel like they have to give viewers something “interesting” to watch. I suppose that, because science fiction is seen in America as something that only nerds watch, Starz wants to broaden its viewing base. I’m not complaining, as I think that the scenes with Angelo definitely showed Jack’s character in an important way, I just don’t believe that they were included for plot purposes. However, as they ended up moving the story forward, I agree with the decision to include them.
@Rosalie
Agreed, but the “sex” scene from Immortal Sins really didn’t have much to do with the plot like the later scene where Angelo stabs Jack.
Also, forgot to mention: glad that Jack hasn’t forgotten Ianto yet (which he inevitably will) which I presume was a big worry for those who doubted the American takeover.
@TE
Well, it did show the extent of the relationship between Jack and Angelo, and set up the stabbing scene. I agree that the sex itself wasn’t incredibly important, but I found that, because their discussion afterwards revealed one of Jack’s major character flaws, it served a purpose in the episode. And I love that Jack remembers Ianto. I love Ianto.
Of course he remembers Ianto! It’s only been a year, and he still remembers WWII (both times) :)
It was a good episode. I liked it better than last week. I still get the feeling though that the first and second half of the series are like two completely different shows. I think I’ve been spoiled by Moffat’s grand multi-series arcs and intricate details. They mentioned Angelo seven episodes in and his story is done by episode eight? Yet he’s a vital part of the plot? I don’t get that.
I do like the Jack-Gwen moments because they understand each other so well. They’re a great team. And I like Gwen’s mother. You can see where Gwen gets her attitude from! ;)
Jack won’t die, we know that. (Don’t we?? Someone tell me RTD won’t callously kill him off!)
The new developments with the “families”, Jilly and that blonde CIA woman are intriguing! If only these had been introduced six episodes earlier it might have felt like Torchwood all along. Ah well… we take what we can get, right? :)
@JASON MARTIN
Who cares if jacks bi; get ova it
the trailer for next episode looks SO EXITING!!!!!!!!!!!1
@e.p
To be honest, there is a possibility someone could die this series given the fact that they’ve always killed off a main character every series. While Vera was important when it came to setting up the series, she wasn’t a main character like Jack, Gwen, Rex, Esther, Rhys and Oswald are.
Then again, I doubt Steven would bring Jack back after he’s died like he’s done with Dorium ;)
As expected: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2030953/Torchwood-Its-supposed-sci-fi-sex-fi-Hundreds-viewers-complain-BBC-pointless-gay-scenes.html
@TE
Let’s hope it’s one of the Americans then (that’s less horrible than it sounds, I’m American :P ). Gwen, Rhys, and Anwen are off limits! No way! And no Jack= no Torchwood, simple. Gwen won’t keep it going by herself, and the rest have got the CIA.
I have no problem with the gay scenes, but I understand people’s complaints that sci-fi should leave out unnecessary sex, no matter who’s doing it.
The difference is this is Torchwood, not typical sci-fi, and I want to know what these people think Torchwood is??
A brief history of Torchwood’s “not really sci-fi but still part of the show” scenes:
-Gwen and Owen (nothing on-screen, but still)
-Jack and Ianto (DUH)
-Jack and the real Captain Jack (wonderful kiss there)
-Rhys’s unnecessarily naked rear end in a couple of scenes (yikes)
-Tosh and that blonde alien woman from series one. (No one complained there)
-Owen and that pilot woman from the 1950s (helloooo full on sex and no one said anything then!)
The media likes stirring up controversy (we know this) and the BBC needs to ignore it. Done.
I’m also fed up with Rex’s homophobia. We get it, he’s uncomfortable, but that’s not making him any more likable to the fans. We’re loyal to Jack, and Rex can shut it.
@e.p
I don’t actually think Rex is homophobic. I mean, he makes a lot of jibes at Jack but they’re really just banter – the ambulance scene from The Categories of Life, for example. Although, it’s getting a bit dull having a jibe in every other episode.
Completely agree, by the way: anyone kills off Gwen and I’ll rip them a *censored for the safety of mankind* :D
WHOA TORCHWOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to admit to being slightly relieved as Miracle Day has continued to become more Torchwood. I still don’t believe it is properly Torchwood, I’ll only know that when this whole story comes to an end and we can appraise the whole series, but it is improving.
I think the structure of Miracle Day has been its problem. Miracle Day, for me, started half way through Episode 5 and has continued to build in the way I’d expect, but I think we as viewers had to slog through four episodes, which unfortunately, were mostly filler. I know it introduced the new characters and everything, but it took Miracle Day four and half hours to really get going and I think that reflects in the figures.
As it stands, up to Episode 6, Miracle Day Episode 1 was seen by the same amount of people that watched Children of Earth consistantly over five days, but since then, it’s been declining week after week with Episode 6 down around 2 million viewers compared to Episode 1 and all 5 episodes of Children of Earth.
I’ve held on because I wanted to see if it would get better, and thankfully and slowly, it is but I can very much understand why people who weren’t that bothered about watching Torchwood would have given up two episodes in.
Miracle Day is getting better and the pace is picking up nicely, both of which I’m grateful for, but I have to feel that its too late. It may be good, it may even end the series feeling just like Torchwood again, but Episodes 1-4 were so slow and filled with so much filler that it’s tainted the series, at least for me, if that makes any sense.
Episodes 5 to 8 of Miracle Day have very slowly now started to become what I hoped the series would be, but it wasn’t for four episodes out of ten and I don’t think I can forgive that, you know.
Having said all that, on the most basic level, we’ve got two last episodes to come and I’m interested to see where Miracle Day has been heading to all this time.
