Video: Watch the new prequel to Let’s Kill Hitler!
As promised, the exclusive prequel to Let’s Kill Hitler has been released on the official Doctor Who site today!
The video, written by showrunner Steven Moffat, features the Doctor listening to a phone call from Amy, and you can watch it here or below. Although it’s only short, it’s a nice little something to keep us going until the second half of this year’s series arrives (whenever that might be…), and it definitely sets the tone of the 6 remaining episodes as being full of heartbreak and surprises.
Steven Moffat and Karen Gillan will be at a screening of Episode 8 at the BFI tonight.
The adventure continues in this brilliant Prequel written by Steven Moffat… The battle of Demon’s Run has been fought. Now return to the TARDIS to discover a little of what happened next!

seems so sad and still no air date
A decent prequel. It was strange, but I could see the age in the Doctor in that bit towards the end. As well as being sad, he looked quite tired and fed up as well, there was something about his face, I don’t know.
Still, it’s interesting how this has come around. Amy knew the Doctor was going to die but didn’t tell him, whilst the Doctor knows how Amy’s daughter River/Melody is going to die and can’t tell her and that’s highlighted in this prequel really. You know, Amy saying that she knows Melody is going to be ok because she grows up to be River.
Now all that’s left is the all-important UK Air Date. It’s getting quite tight for a 27th August airdate with 12 days to go, but we’ll see
@JC
I think his face is saying he has not the foggiest where Melody is. In AGMGTW the Doctor says he knows where to find Melody so he might have gone there to find out either she was there and has now been moved somewhere else or she wasn’t at that place at all.
@Patrick
Possibly, yeah
I didn’t know what was wrong with him, I was just commenting on how he looked when he felt like that, that was all
In the wide shot you can’t see him but then at 1:18 he appears. Wonder where he had been?
He must have been hiding from the camera behind the Time Rotor.
But why is he so sad now? When we last saw him, he was excited and happy and smiling as he jumped into the TARDIS, ready and willing to go and save Melody. Now he’s all sad and forlorn, as if he hasn’t a clue what to do.
You better believe I’ll be there watching to see what happens when it happens.
Apparently, saving Melody won’t be as easy as it seemed to be in A good Man Goes To War. Maybe that’s what the Doctor realised. Plus, as mentioned by JC, don’t forget that River will sacrifice herself to save the Doctor. Must be hard to live with now that he’s friends with her parents. I hope this issue will be addressed.
Anyway, I love the prequel but I’m surprised there’s no air date ? It would have been the perfect time to finally announce it…
@Bad Wolf
There’s something else that’s interesting related to the end of her life, because when River’s in the library and she meets Donna, she knows her and what will eventually happen to her, so at some point, the Doctor is gonna have to at least talk to her about Donna.
Perhaps it’s related to River being half Time Lord, half human and Donna being the Doctor Donna through meta-crisis, that might be why the subject of Donna comes up.
Must be awful for the Doctor to stand there and know how Melody dies but at the same time knowing he has to find her soon because she becomes River.
Judging by the rumoured pre-titles sequence of Let’s Kill Hitler, I really think that the Doctor doesn’t know whether or not he’s supposed to save Melody or if he even can. Brilliant prequel!
So far we don’t know what surprises the journey from baby Melody to Adult River has in store. That’s why Series 6 Part 2 is so intriguing. We know the outcome, but how do we get there ? And will Amy and Rory be able to be part of her life ? I’d like to know when and how the photo of Amy and the little girl glimpsed in Day of the Moon has been taken…
@JC
Seeing the conversation about Donna on screen would a nice continuity bit. If River is bound to become the most important person in the Doctor’s life (she knows his name), he must have told her about all of his previous companions as well. There is another moment that I hope we’ll see : when the Doctor gives his screwdriver to River just before she goes to the Library (Remember ? The Singing Towers, the Doctor’s tears…); this special moment has yet to come for the Doctor but it involves an older River (between the Angels and The Library). It would be an awesome final appearance for River in the show, seeing her going into her final adventure with the Doctor knowing he’ll never see her again, bittersweet and powerful. Oh I love her character so much, there are so many great things that could be done with her…
@Bad Wolf
You’re right, the journey is the interesting bit. And there was that clip of her with an eye patch in the previous trailer so it seems there are plenty more surprises to come!
I totally agree with you about River’s final appearance. That could be such a great episode! River is one of my favorite characters and Alex Kingston plays her brilliantly
I agree with all the above suggesting that we need to see the Singing Towers scene. That could be absolutely beautiful.
Re: the prequel specifically, I thought Matt Smith’s expression was heart-breaking. I agree with Patrick: I don’t think he knows where Melody aged a month or so is. That’s the tragedy – at some point he’s got to tell Amy that he doesn’t know. He’s not picking up the phone because he can’t yet bear to do that.
When he picks Rory and Amy up at the beginning of LKH, that’s going to be a tragic moment for what is essentially the beginning of the series… I can’t wait!
Aww man, that is just heart breaking… :/ I can’t wait for LKH!! I agree with everyone saying the Singing Towers scene should so happen. I wonder if Matt Smith has the power to do a powerfully, emotional scene, I bet he does. :)
Makes me wonder if the River story will continue into future series? And if so will she be part of the 50th anniversary in 2013?
@ema
With Steven in charge, you can bet she will be ;)
