John says Torchwood movie is “next progression”
In a new interview with End of Show, John Barrowman has revealed that he’d love to take Torchwood to the big screen.
Although the cast and crew are “still waiting” for news of a fifth series, the actor told the site that he thinks a movie is the right step forward. “What I would like is Jack Harkness on the big screen,” he explained. “After four seasons I think that is our next progression. I’d get my production company involved in it, I’d get Russell and Julie involved in it, and I think it would look phenomenal on the big screen.”

Unbelievable that everyone on here would prefer Torchwood to suddenly revert to being a pedestrian little BBC3 show with a minority following, than a huge exciting epic watched by millions all over the globe. The truth is that it had to change in order to be accessible to more than just a few hardcore fans who just won’t accept progress. Just because it’s different – and it is a completely different show, I’ll admit – doesn’t in any way make it a bad show. Just try judging it for what it is rather than what it isn’t! And not having aliens in it doesn’t make it bad drama, in fact it probably enhances it immensely! It was always about people first and foremost anyway.
@Rassilon’s Rod
I disagree with you. If Torchwood carries on the way it did in Miracle Day, I’d be happy to stop watching it all together.
Doctor Who doesn’t pander to global audiences, it says this is what I am and you can take it or leave it and as it happens, Season 1 and 2 ran on the same format as Doctor Who did at the height of David Tennant’s reign.
I liked Torchwood the way it was, that doesn’t mean I can’t accept progress, it just means that I recognise the difference between good progress and bad progress and Miracle Day was bad progress in my opinion.
@JC
But what does having the same format as Doctor Who prove? Torchwood isn’t Doctor Who and while I agree that it was a good solid format, I really admire the team for daring to break away from that and do something different. And Doctor Who really doesn’t say ‘This is what I am, take it or leave it’. It is in essence a Saturday night entertainment for the whole family and the addition of much emotion to the format (too much in my opinion!) is just one example of how it has changed to pull in a modern audience. Cutting back on the number of on screen deaths and general violence is another. Besides, if Doctor Who became too insular I doubt the BBC would be too happy, because at the end of the day ratings are what counts to them and that means pleasing the masses without worrying about upsetting a minority of Doctor Who/Torchwood fans. Sorry if this sounds like a rant, it’s just that I find it very disheartening when I’ve really enjoyed a show, to come on here and find my fellow fans being so down on it rather than focussing on the positives! Personally I didn’t like the changes Moffat made to Doctor Who at first. But I accept that shows change and I can’t do anything about it because I am but a humble viewer and have to enjoy the programme for what it is rather than what it isn’t. Getting back to Torchwood, I guess it depends entirely on how much you liked it in the first place. Personally I always felt it needed to be bigger and more entertaining. And now it is, so I’m personally very happy with the changes and am sure it’s attracted new fans who have no idea what it began life as! I’ve judged this latest series on its own terms rather than comparing it to a show it has ceased to be.
I can understand that, what you said about other Torchwood fans being negative about Miracle Day, but it’s just the way we feel. Too often these days, shows “modernise” or “appeal to a newer audience”, whilst alienating the existing audience and I think to a degree, Miracle Day has alienated us in various ways.
Having said that, if Miracle Day had been in Children of Earth format, I think we’d be looking at a more successful series.
@The Parminder Victorious
Well that is most likely the reason it’s very complicated and to be honest it’s wrong because yes you are right it was Rose! We is a fixed point in time
@JC
JC your comments couldnt be more true
Actually, I don’t really know what to think about a ‘possible’ movie. I’ve read before that it would be too “americanized” and I totally agree with this.
I think all of us Torchwood fans, we liked the fact that the show was a totally British institution. Now it’s kinda like the US just stole this from us. Of course, if the show moved to the US that was so that Starz could help with the budget. Right, I know that. But I mean I think we all miss Cardiff.
It was where it all began, because of the rift, because of everything. And now they’ve like forgot about it and made it to the US? The rift didn’t just disappear. I don’t think that aliens just stopped showing up everywhere in Cardiff. And where did the hell Torchwood go? Cardiff need them. That’s why the hub was built here after all.
This series was a new step for Torchwood, all right we got it. But we’ve also lost too much from the original plot. We want our aliens back!
I don’t think this series was so bad after all, but what the hell with the CIA? Too americanized…
There was a time where Torchwood used to act on their own.
I miss good old Cardiff.
Except that at this point, I don’t think they will ever go back to Cardiff. John Barrowman said in the interview that they’ll still shot in Wales, but that’s it.
They’d better do something really good for Series 5. Just remind us what Torchwood used to be!
i think miracle day was very good although slow in places, i agree that torchwood should work on its own after all its supposed to be outside the government etc. i just hope that with rex being immortal it doesn’t do a csi style split and become two separte shows. also more aliens less humans please. i like the idea that john barrowman suggests more of jack’s past. i was disappointed to see russel t davies kill off characters but i guess i should be used to that by now.lol
im in america and i only watched three episodes of miracle day and in my opinion tw4 lost something when there was a rift cardiff and aliens i was hooked but i dont know about a movie…i think that would be a hard sell, don’t get me wrong i love torchwood.but it needs to go back to it’s roots a lil bit….
im not too sure about a movie i think the series should stay as a series and not go into the realms of films
