Steven Moffat has said that he has “no immediate plans” to step down as the Doctor Who showrunner.

“I haven’t got any kind of plans to leave. I take it one series at a time,” he told AOL TV recently. “Doctor Who on its own is an incredible work load, astonishing. And to have that and to have Sherlock, it’s savage. So I’d like to get out before it kills me. But it is not killing me at the moment, and I love doing it. When it’s time to go, you make sure that it’s looked after. I want it to go on and triumph long after I stop.”

Very nice statement, that one. Sort of says everything that needs to be said. I suppose that’s why he’s a writer, isn’t it?

I wonder who would be next, in a few years. It seems like Mark Gatiss would probably be high up the list, no one else feels like an obvious choice at the moment at least.

Ah, this is good news! They said whoever took over after Tennant would have some big (Converse) shoes to fill as the Doctor, but that’s nowhere NEAR the size of the shoes the next writer will have to fill! :D

I hope, if he does step down, Neil Gaiman will take over. Seems unlikely, though. :/

I’m still not sure I like Mark Gatiss, it’s just a personal preference when considering his work on Doctor Who, though where I agree with TWWL is that I can’t think of anyone that could take over either, no one yet stands out as a capable and strong replacement.

I don’t agree with Steven Moffat on quite a few of his decisions since he took over, as well as various personal views he’s expressed in interviews, but I do respect the weight he has on his shoulders and the story teller he can be and that when RTD went, despite my opinions of Moffat, I think he was the right choice to replace RTD and I can’t say that in regards to anyone to replace Moffat at the moment.

So in the interest of keeping Doctor Who stable and on our screens, I’m cool with Steven Moffat staying for now.

Please stand down Moffat before your version of the series becomes repetitive. Series 5 was a fantastic start but I am not feeling it as much with series 6. I do believe him though when he says he has no sudden intentions of leaving.

I would Mark Gatiss to take over after SM but I don’t think he will as he is not only a busy writer, but also an actor and I doubt he would give up acting for the length of time to do dr who.

I personally think Gareth Roberts would take over as he is next one up on the pecking order and his episodes have always been good.

When Doctor Who came back in 2005, the choice of RTD as main writer worried me, he previous programmes always started off very well but follow up seasons were dreadful. True to form, RTD became a marmite writer, you either hated it or liked it! Now, after 2 years of SM, although I still think RTD’s writing is like Marmite but at least he understood the series. True, RTD did have a theme running through his series but it was a very loose theme and you did not really need to watch the whole thing to understand what is going on. SM needs to bring some adventure back to Doctor Who and what worries me more is “Let’s Kill Hitler” ripped off his own earlier stories. In fact one scene so closely follows Curse of Fatal Death, it was ridiculous!
If your looking for a follow up writer, there is really only one choice, Justin Richards. His novels are amazingly well written and he understands the Doctor through all his incarnations.

Stand down? He’s only had a series and a half on screen so far! He’ll be around for at least another series or two.

I’ve no problem with Gareth Roberts, but he’s only written two good episodes so far (in my opinion) with Closing Time looking to be another good episode. But The Unicorn and the Wasp and Planet of the Dead weren’t exactly brilliant, especially the latter. I think Mark Gatiss might be a better replacement really.
