So, how was The Girl Who Waited rated then? Well, it was seen by an unofficial audience of 6.0million (26.8%) on BBC One, making Doctor Who the 3rd most watched programme of the day, behind The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing.

It has also been received extremely well by the critics, with the Telegraph describing it as “a powerful, moving drama”. It was “something to properly get your teeth into” notes the Guardian, and the Independent reveals it was “a tearful tragedy”. SFX have rated it a brilliant 5 out of 5.

Over in our discussion, Tom MacRae’s story’s had an overall positive response. It was “absolutely fantastic” according to Dave, while TWWL also thought it was “outstanding drama”. Kiki can’t “believe what has happened” to the series. Share your thoughts too!

Series 6 continues next Saturday in The God Complex, airing at 7:10pm on BBC One.

    I have this episode and Doctor’s Wife tied as best episode. A brilliant job. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but this is one of those episodes where I feel sorry for those who, for whatever reason, didn’t like it (one forum post even accused it of ripping off, of all things, a Star Trek Voyager episode), because they just come off sounding like sour grapes in the midst of a flood of positive word of mouth.

    @Alex
    Doesn’t mean they’re wrong though, everyone’s entitled to their opinion. Personally I thought it was alright but not the best.

    I thought it was ripped off from Tom Hanks “Castaway” meets Newt from “Aliens” with a bit more of the “Time Travelers Wife” thrown in. Amy’s character development, aside from her understandable bitterness was poorly conceived, her continued lack of acknowledgment of her baby is wrong especially since it’s the product of her and Rory’s love ( about which we are beat over the head..yeah we get it…), her sudden genius even though she’s never exhibited any prior to this episode all add up to a crap episode. If handbots see with their hands why are they bipedal with enormous useless heads? Oh, so Amy can paint a supercilious face on one ala Castaway and call it Rory. Got it. Amy doesn’t ask which button to push? She doesn’t ask to see her child’s face but the earth in her final moments? And of course Rory and the Dr get rid of the brilliant, strong Amy who has inexplicably turned herself into a River type character and whom Rory calls a genius like the Dr and who won’t need to be cared for like a child and save sexy dumb Amy since the other one is all ugly and old…cant have that. Just when Amy finally gets truly interesting they kill her. Pity.

    And Alex, there is room for many opinions and one is not “right” and another “wrong”. Consensus has never been a good way to decide what is ultimately great; quite the contrary.
