The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe!
During Children in Need on BBC1 last night, we were shown an exclusive preview of next month’s Doctor Who Christmas Special!
In addition, its title was also confirmed as The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe, and we know that it features Claire Skinner as Madge Arwell, who’s evacuated from war-torn London with her two children, Lily and Cyril. There, they are greeted by a madcap caretaker whose mysterious Christmas gift leads them into a magical world.
You can watch the trailer here or below. Don’t forget to have your say in the comments!
And that’s not all! See what happened when the Doctor bared all for the charity below…
If you haven’t donated, it’s not too late! You can find out how to show your spots here.

THIS WAS BRILLIANT! And I think I can justify the caps, because wasn’t it? Wasn’t it brilliant? Some of the fun Eleven-ish dialogue that first brought us onboard in the Eleventh Hour, plus all the tumblr gifs that have emerged of Amy hitting the remote in 5.4 after the Doctor says don’t press the red button…
And then the Christmas special. Well. I have to admit that my first thought was a little bit peeved. Are we getting nothing original for Christmas? But then I realised what I was thinking and told myself off severely: come on! It’s Narnia! And Doctor Who! At Christmas! Who cares if it’s not original? The Daleks aren’t original nowadays! We still love them!
Ooh. I’m going to get hated for that last bit, aren’t I? Sorry, I know there’s a huge difference between reusing monsters created for Doctor Who and completely nicking someone else’s story. The only point I really wanted to make was that familiarity doesn’t spell disaster. And this is Moffat, after all. First it was flying fish in A Christmas Carol, now it’s robots in Narnia. It’s not going to be what we expect.
Anyway, I really should get back to my research, but I had to say that I LOVE THIS!
And there go the caps again…
I had doubts too, but I think it is still going to be far too obviously Who for me to complain about it. Sounds fab!
To be honest, I would’ve preferred the wilder Magician’s Nephew but still: Narnia in Doctor Who equals one very happy fan! I do wonder whether we will ever see an original Christmas story during Steven’s era but his adaptation of A Christmas Carol was absolutely brilliant so this is bound to be too.
Personally, I think Moffat’s a genius. The idea of taking a well-known tale and turning it into something fantastcally different – but recognisable – is just amazing. Loved A Christmas Carol. I think The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe is going to be just as great.
I’ve never been interested in The Chronicles of Narnia and know next to nothing about them, so I can’t say that the fact that this year’s Christmas Special is technically based on The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is that exciting to me.
I don’t know, I think I’m very sadly drifting away from Doctor Who now. I didn’t and still don’t understand the ending to Series 6, whilst all the other fans on here do and for whatever reason, the excitement and fun I used to have and feel with Doctor Who has almost all but gone, again, very sadly.
I’ll watch the Christmas Special this year, but I didn’t watch the Trailer on Children In Need and I still haven’t, because I don’t think it will make much difference personally.
@JC I think your comment is quite sad and a little upsetting. I know we have had some differences of opinion but I feel the same. After 36 years, it is a sad state of affairs.
Still the Christmas episode looks good. I am a little miffed that once again Steven Moffat has not been able to base a christmas special on his own ideas, preferring to plagiarise someone else’s work.
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is an amazing story and worth reading.
I watched “The Wedding of River Song” again tonight and after all this time of torturing myself over not understanding, it finally clicked into place and I understood.
So yeah, I finally understand the end of Series 6, took me a long time. Perhaps I’ll give Doctor Who another chance now.
This preview made my…Day? Week? Month? I’m just ready for more of the Doctor’s frenetic energy! Bring it on says “The Fan, the Tevision, and the Remote Control!
When I first saw that green thing I immediately thought ENTS have come to Doctor Who in Narnia :P
I cannot wait for the Christmas special to come. Doctor Who “reinvents” itself for the era–he can work now with cell phones and laptops and all that, after all—and sometimes good drama includes taking “familiar” stories and setting them topsy-turvy or wibbly-wobbly. Been done in many series probably more than audiences realize.
And this is Doctor Who after all! I have been slowly re-watching every episode from “Rose”, including all the Christmas specials and extras, to catch the momentum and development of this new “21st century” Doctor.
There are far more foreshadowings and connections and similarities in and between and among Nine, Ten and Eleven than I first realized when I started watching in 2005.
If it is Doctor Who–bring it on. Whatever it is. Imagination is fantastic, and amazing—and completely and forever cool.
I think I might have said this before but after 16 years of being a Doctor Who fan I too am losing interest the series… and Ive never felt this way about Doctor Who, which must mean there is something wrong with the Moffats take on the series. Its not that I find it complicated, its lost something I cant quite put my finger on. No doubt Ill get slaughtered by the Moffat lovers for saying this
@Steve
We have had differences of opinion, but I’ve always tried to respect that, you know.
It helped that yesterday, I re-watched “The Wedding of River Song” and finally understood it, so I kind of feel like I’m up-to-date and on the same level as other Doctor Who fans.
As The 13th Doctor said, there are a lot of Moffat fans on here and that’s cool. I don’t count myself as one of them, but I’m not going to say they’re wrong for enjoying his work.
As with The 13th Doctor though, for me, there’s something tangible missing from Doctor Who now and it means I’m not as excited to see it as I used to be.
Still, I know I will be watching the Christmas Special, the 10th Doctor fan is still alive in me and that’s enough for me to watch new Doctor Who when it’s on………for now.
@Steve
Plagiarise? For Heavens sake…
@JC @The 13th Doctor
Personally, I am a Moffat fan, but my favourite stories of his remain the ones he did during RTD’s tenure. If I had to get picky, I’d say that I prefer Moffat’s writing, but RTD’s exec producing.
That said, I remain as excitable as ever whenever we get new material – I was one of those people stalking the Doctor Who tag yesterday on tumblr for DVD extras (don’t judge me – I will get my own copy of the boxset, just not until Christmas). Maybe it’s my youth/student-ness, maybe it’s just that I’m a very excitable person, but I can’t imagine a time when I wasn’t as excited as ever about Doctor Who. You all read how I was a bit disappointed with TW:MD this year, but you should have seen me every Thursday night, running to the living room to turn the telly on. No matter the exact calibre of the arcs, the stories or whatever, it’s the fact that there is new DW that gets me excited. I would have been terrible in the eighties!
I’ve seen the four ‘connected’ mini-episodes (good night, band night, first night and last night) and trust me, they’re amazing. There’s some fantastic lines and a really sad bit, but I won’t spoil it for you. :)
@TSG
@TSG
Without going into much detail, I too am quite young. You mentioned about getting excited everytime Doctor Whos on, I have to admit I used to do that quite alot, but now I actually dont care if its on or not. As I said before, since Moffat took over, something has disappeared from the show. I dont know whether it is how less dramatic the show has become, or if its something as simple as that there arent any big baddies at the end of the series anymore. Since day 1 I have never liked Karen Gillan as the companion, maybe thats got something to do with it, but I honestly dont know what it is thats wrong with the series.
@JC
Glad that you finally understood Series 6
Its a shame that Ive found myself switching off now because I remember I was one of the few people who believed Matt Smith & Steven Moffat would be able to do the series justice, but it appears I was wrong….
@TSG
I personally think that the series 6 finale was awful, it was confusing and didnt even seem like a finale it still seems like we’re on series 5 of Dr.who. Yet everybody blames Matt Smith’s acting for the lower ratings when its actually the poor feeble attempts of Steven Moffat. But this christmas special actually looks okay, I personally dont like Narnia but its not a half bad idea. Basically it looks better than Last years christmas special which was Just awful. Like JC said the 10th doctor fan is still in me too.
