Entries from December 2011
It’s the last day of the year, so it’s time to get nostalgic and look back at what 2011 has been for the Doctor!
Suffice to say, there hasn’t been a dull moment (then again, when is there whenever the Doctor’s around?), and the past 12 months have seen more shocks and surprises than a date with River Song! Not only have we had 13 episodes of drama with the Doctor, we’ve also been treated to a 10-part series of Torchwood, as well as the fifth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures – but all that’s just half the story!
We found out that Stetsons are cool, Hitler went in a cupboard, Jack and Gwen returned, and we discovered that it’s probably best if Amy puts some trousers on…
All in all, it’s been a fantastic year to be a Doctor Who fan, however there has also been moments of sadness, and, as we prepare for another new year, it’s time to remember those we’ve lost, too. We will never forget Nicholas Courtney and Elisabeth Sladen, who have left lasting legacies in the Doctor Who world, loved by fans young and old.
So, what will you take away with you from 2011? What have been your personal Doctor Who highlights? Let us know what you’ve loved and loathed this year in the comments!

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a festive helping of the Doctor, but how has this year’s festive adventure been recieved by the press? Let’s find out!
Firstly, the episode was seen by an audience of 8.9 million, making Doctor Who the fourth most watched programme of Christmas Day, behind EastEnders, Coronation Street and Downton Abbey. According to the Guardian, “it felt perfect” for the time of year, and it was “full of festive magic”, says the Telegraph.
Elsewhere, the Metro has described the “star-studded adventure” as “perfection”, while SFX praises Steven Moffat for “delivering a sweet tale” aiming “squarely for the heart”.
Do you agree or disagree with the reviews above? As always, you can have your say!

When Madge and her children, Lily and Cyril, are evacuated to a draughty old house in Dorset during World War II, they enter a magical wintry new world with the Doctor.
It’s that time of year again, which means helpings of turkey, presents and… the Doctor!
In this day and age, celebrating Christmas without our beloved Time Lord would be like celebrating Christmas without carols and crackers, so it’s only right that he should come along to brighten up our screens and help make the festive season even more special.
Even though he has only been away for a couple of months, his return – as it always is – was long overdue, as he journeyed to a magical wintry world with a family of evacuees…
As the title suggests, this year’s Christmas Special drew inspiration from the well loved Narnia story, with an added timey-wimey twist that only Doctor Who could employ. But was the story a Christmas classic, or is it one you wish Santa had never even delivered?
The Doctor gave the Arwell family a Christmas to remember, but should it be forgotten? Did it make for the best Christmas ever, as Madge Arwell would say? And how does it rate against the Doctor’s previous Christmas adventures? Rate below! Merry Christmas!

Karen Gillan has been speaking to the Los Angeles Times about all things Doctor Who!
At the beginning of the interview, she reflects on this year’s series, describing it as “the best so far”… “I think the stakes were upped this time round,” she said. “Everything got more dangerous, more funny and darker at the same time. There is kind of light and shade to it, so it is not all serious.” About her relationships with Rory and River, she joked: “How do you even put that on paper as a family tree?”
She goes on to discuss her future career aspirations, as she reveals: “I want to do more theatre. I have a real passion for it. I want to do it as much as screen stuff, so that’d be really amazing. Maybe something on Broadway. I’d love to do that. Not a musical, like a play on Broadway. I genuinely just want to do good work. I’m interested in character.”
Earlier this month it was confirmed that she will be leaving Doctor Who during Series 7.
The BBC recently released the first official picture of Karen Gillan as Jean Shrimpton!
The actress portrays the model in a new drama called We’ll Take Manhattan, which is to air on BBC Four next month.
The 90 minute one off film explores the model’s love affair with British photographer David Bailey, focusing particularly on their first meeting at a New York photoshoot. Karen has previously said she was “so excited” to take on the role.
Earlier this month it was confirmed Karen will be leaving Doctor Who during Series 7.

Arabella Weir’s admitted that she felt “genuinely surprised and completely thrilled” when she was offered her role in this year’s Christmas Special.
Speaking to the Telegraph, she said: “It is such a fantastic show – brilliantly written and produced, and here they were, wanting me to be in it! I instantly said yes, without reading the script. When I did read it, I got even more excited since it turned out I was an alien from the future and would get to wear a metal-with-flashing-lights alien outfit!”
She explained: “It’s very Christmassy, as you might expect – lots of snow, humour, quite sad in places, and yet it’s also full of surprises, suspense and some scary bits.”
The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe airs on BBC1 at 7pm on Christmas Day.
