Amy and Rory to leave during the next series
It has been confirmed that Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will be leaving Doctor Who during the next series.
The actors will be stepping down from their respective roles – Amy Pond and Rory Williams – in what showrunner Steven Moffat described as “a heartbreaking end” at the screening of the Christmas Special earlier tonight.
“The final days of the Ponds are coming,” he said. “I’m not telling you when or how.”
Matt Smith added: “We had the most incredible journey. We took over the show and we’ve really had to hold hands and help each other through. It’s very disappointing, but one has to remember that this show is about making changes and regeneration.”
As always, the Doctor will be meeting “a new friend” following their departure, and it is thought that the role of his new companion is still to be cast. Who would you like to see? The official site’s Twitter has said that they’ll be bringing us “more details” tomorrow.

Series 7 filming begins in February, with its broadcast “moving a bit later” in 2012.

Whooooooooooooohooooooooooooooo
I don’t want them to go, but they have to. :^( Their story has been told, so it will be nice to get some fresh blood for the 50th!
I’m not of the opinion that the companions have to change every other season (or worse every freaking season ugh). I woudn’t of minded them being there for the 50th and then moving on.
As much as I love Amy and Rory, I think it is time for them to leave
When I heard that Rory and Amy were leaving the show, I felt nothing and I think that’s a reflection of how I’ve felt since Steven Moffat took over.
As bad as I know this sounds, I don’t really care. As for Steven Moffat saying that their end story will be “heart breaking”……..well, perhaps it will, but Moffat has used the words heart breaking so many times that they’ve kind of lost any meaning to me. Well, that and the fact that the other things he’s said were going to be heart breaking actually turned out not to be in the slightest.
I do like Karen, a lot, but I’m ready to move on to a new Companion.
It is time for a change, but they’ve been brilliant. Smith, Amy and Rory has been a classic team aboard the Tardis.
I bet Steve will be delighted with this.
I wish they would have stayed at least for series 8 because I feel that Moffat has somewhat forgotten a few things about series 5 like amy’s house in leadworth having an impossible 3rd floor and the crack in amy’s bedroom wall etc. I am disappointed as they’re my favourite companions.
Im hoping the new companion would be either Sally Sparrow or someone from Earth but in the future.
I don’t think it is time for them to leave, there is so much more you could do. I don’t think they have been used to their full potential, however.
i think its time for them to go and bring in new blood to mix the show up again its sad they r going but i think its for the best for the futre of the show
I love Amy and Rory, but I guess it’s time for a change. Whoever comes next will have some fairly large shoes to fill…
I hope they don’t do something silly like just stick River as companion.
@Lisa-Marie – Well considering they’ll be leaving just as the show reaches its 50th Anniversary, having a character like River Song as the companion wouldn’t be a bad idea. If anything it’d be logical than introducing a new one at that point.
In any case, it’ll be sad to see them go, but after 3 years it’s long enough for them to have mad an impact and to a degree I’d say it shows that for NuWho it’s better a companion only be in the show for 2 years, rather than 3.
They were brilliant companions and they both gelled to the Doctor. But, I do think it’s time for a new companion. Jack Harkness, maybe? Craig? Not River though, she’s had her time. Or a companion that’s not human? That’d be interesting.
I love both Amy and Rory. They’ve had a nice dynamic, and it’s been fantastic seeing them through such important stages in their life together, but it’s a good time to move on. Good for the characters, good for the show, and good for their careers. You don’t want to stay in something for too long. And there does come a point where you can’t take a character any further. I read an interview with Terry Pratchett where he talked about how reluctant he is to do stories with some of his most beloved characters now, because as he sees it, you have to know when to stop and let them live on in people’s imagination instead, or you end up ruining them. He was talking particularly about Rincewind and Sam Vimes; he’s taken the characters as far as he can without getting ridiculous with them, so now it’s time for them to become supporting characters and bring in some more new names. And I think he’s said the latest Tiffany Aching book is the last one, for the same reason.
Amy and Rory have come full circle, in my opinion. Their relationship is solid, they know who they are and what their relationship to River Song is, and they are secure in themselves. They’ve grown up. Doctor Who is a bit of a fairy tale, after all — part of the function of a companion is to be sort of an avatar for the audience, and the audience is intended to have a lot of children in it. For the companions, it’s almost always a coming-of-age story. The quest format, where a young person goes off with a strange wizard or whatever and has adventures for a while before finding himself/herself and leaving to seek his/her own way. Not all companions fit this mold, but the vast majority did. And no wonder — it’s probably the oldest archetype of them all, because it speaks to the most monumental thing in human life, figuring out who you are and then going and being that person.
But I wouldn’t mind seeing them again anyway. They’re fun. ;-) It would be cool to have them involved in the transition to a new companion.
I love Amy and Rory, but I’m ready for a new companion, and I think they’re ready to move on as well. They will live on in fanfiction. ;-)
Did someone delete my comment or am I just not seeing it?………Could be the latter, knowing my browser
Yup, was my browser, can see it again now. No worries
all in favour of rose say aye!
I dont mind them leaving, i loved them but i think a change will be good
I can’t say I am not glad to see the back of Amy. She is talentless. No emotion, no acting ability. Doctor Who needs good companions. Amy is not!
Whilst I liked the dynamic of The Doctor travelling with a married couple, I think the Pond era has run it’s course.
To be honest, the storyline should have ended with The Wedding of River Song with Amy, Rory and River being happy that their “Raggedy Doctor” was alive and well.
In addition to that, it would have been a good way to introduce the next chapter of the Eleventh Doctor’s story as he tries to make himself less of a legend and more like the character of old.
Thank you Karen and Arthur.
