Two missing Classic Series episodes are recovered
It’s been announced that two missing Doctor Who episodes from the Classic Series have been recovered!
The third episode of Galaxy 4, starring William Hartnell as the First Doctor, and Episode 2 of The Underwater Menace, with Second Doctor Patrick Troughton, were considered to be lost forever. Terry Burnett, a former TV engineer, however, had purchased them from a a school fete in the 1980s, and was, until recently, unaware that all the footage on the tapes was in fact missing from the BBC archive.
The episodes were screened at the BFI in London over the weekend, where Mark Gatiss noted: “Christmas has come early for Doctor Who fans everywhere. It’s wonderful when a missing episode turns up, but it’s been years since the last so to have two is brilliant.”
See episode clips here! Plans for their commercial releases will be revealed next year.

i cant wait for them to relise them on dvd so i can buy them and watch them and keep them in my hugh doctor who collection
What a wonderful Christmas present to DW fans everywhere! Thank-you for returning these. Can’t wait to see them!
@Professor Zed
i wonder if they will relise them soon r weather it wil take years to do a lot of remaster work on them
@shawn
Considering it’s only two episodes and have already shown them partially restored at an event over the weekend, it’s more likely we’ll see them out by mid-2012.
Doctor Who episodes never take ‘years’ to restore, as they’re completely different to movies. A regular four-part story will take about 9-12 months to restore, if less.
@Jack
ok thanks for telling me that :)
There should be a call out to any and everyone that had any of the original Doctor Who episodes! Think of all the people that worked on the show during the sixties! You mean none of those people kept anything and stashed it in their attics? Someone’s grandchild could be sitting on a gold mine!
