Matt Smith appeared on BBC Radio 1 earlier today, briefly discussing what’s coming up for the Doctor, with filming for Series 7 due to begin next month.

He revealed that “there’s a long way to go” before he’ll need to contemplate his future in the role. “We have got another year to do, and then who knows what after that,” he said. “It has got to get better. That’s the key. It has to be better each year.” When asked if he watches new episodes as they air, he joked: “I’m far too vain not to!”

What’s around the corner? Keep up to date with the new series developments!

Hmmm…can’t say forever at this point but I wouldnt be disappointed if he hung out for a while longer. I do like Matt and I am interested in seeing where he can take his character in the future!

But don’t mind me folks, I’ve just dropped my soada and had it land right side up! i’m pretty giddy at the moment! I’m either going to have to leave now and go play the lottery or hide under my bed because I’ve used up all my luck for the day!

He’ll be in the role untill at least the 2013 50th anniversary. Long may he continue.

Um, admin, you’ve got a typo: it should be “I’m far too vain not to” with a single ‘o’ on the last word.

Other than that, yep, long may Matt’s reign continue! I really enjoy his interpretation of the role, and I don’t think we’re at the point where he needs to go yet. A change in companion should keep the show fresh for a good while yet.

Okay, why is it that I’m having a hard time seeing what type of companion would work with him? As much as I hate to say it…Amy worked! Of all my complaints she was never was one them.

Maybe a companion from the past, like Victorian times, who Smith can impress and educate in the ways if the Universe.

The only problem I have with a Companion from the past is that since Doctor Who was revived, the main Companions have been from our time, kind of grounding the Series to the time the show is broadcast and to the audience.

If you have a Companion from the past, you’ll have no direct reference to now or the audience, if you see what I’m saying. You’ll have a Companion for which there is the future and the past, but there’s little reason for the Doctor to take them to our present on Earth.

Temporary Companions from the past could work though.

As for Matt staying or leaving, to be honest, I don’t really care either way, though I would prefer it to be sooner rather than later.

I’d like to see someone that knows something this go round. No offense but it was the one thing I liked about Martha Jones, she was clever enough to be able to figure some things out on her own. It gets annoying watching a companion that goes….OOOH….all the time!

Totally agree! Donna was the best of the most recent companions! She was tough and she challenged the doctor’s sense of morality.

Rose was always a curious one for me. I loved her completely, dont get me wrong, but I felt like Sarah did too. “You can tell you’re getting older your assistants are getting younger!”

It was another reason why I like Martha. She was young, but she had something going on with training to be a doctor and all. Meanwhile Donna’s experience with life was more practical and came in handy time after time!
