Murray Gold has revealed that he enjoys penning the music for the more emotionally charged Doctor Who storylines the most, admitting that he is “definitely trying to make people cry” when he sits down to write his scores.

In an interview with The Australian, which took place prior to yesterday’s concert of the series music which was held in Melbourne, the composer explained: “I don’t plan to write motifs for each of the characters, but it just worked out that way. But we were definitely trying to make people cry.”

He also discusses his ideal work environment. “I don’t speak to anyone at all when I am writing,” he said. “I prefer just to work on my own and then be as creative as possible.”

Which of Murray’s Doctor Who scores break your heart? Let us know in the comments…

I think that it’s pretty hard to say which awesome score is my favorite, but if I had to narrow it down to one or two, “Rose’s Theme/Doomsday” and “I Am the Doctor” are my favorites. The Doctor/Rose story is heartbreaking beyond comprehension, and the score is perfect for the emotional rollercoaster. “I Am the Doctor” is triumphant and sad and brilliant, wonderful. Hard to encompass a person as big as The Doctor as well as is done by the music of Murray Gold! Can’t wait for the next series.

I have a friend who STILL cries at ‘Doomsday’. Personally, though, my saddest piece is ‘Madame du Pompadour. The dynamics and the rubato tempo, and the innocence that reminds you of her younger self… It makes me want to hug someone.

I enjoyed his Series 1-4 + Specials work, but I’ve only been able to pick and choose a couple of tracks from Series 5 and 6.

It’s possible people might say I would say that, but it’s actually the truth. I think the problem started immediately when I heard the 11th Doctor’s theme music. I’ve grown accustomed to it now, but at the time……..it almost offended me.

Here we had a powerful Series 4 theme, quite bassy, fast paced with a strong drumbeat as the Tardis ripped through the Time Vortext and it was replaced with what I saw as the Tardis flying through a storm and then fire with a wishy-washy, dreamy theme and as I say, that kind of offended me, though I have now got used to it as the theme of Doctor Who.

Having said that, his Series 1 to 4 + Specials work could be amazing.

“Vale Decem” for the 10th Doctor’s regeneration, “Rose’s Theme”, “Song of Freedom”, “Doomsday”, that Series 4 theme that sounds so amazing on my iPod.

As I said, I do enjoy some of the stuff he did for Series 5, especially “Down To Earth” when the Tardis was crashing, “I Am The Doctor” and “Little Amy (The Apple)”.

I think Murray Gold has a talent. He clearly enjoys his work on Doctor Who and it has been great to see him involved with the Doctor Who Proms in the past. I think Doctor Who is lucky to have him, I just have to be honest and say I think I preferred his work prior to Series 5.
