Toby Whithouse, Chris Chibnall return for Series 7
Toby Whithouse and Chris Chibnall have been announced as two of the writers to be lending their creativity to the latest series of Doctor Who.
The news is confirmed in this month’s DWM, which goes on sale tomorrow, and SFX have the full details. Whithouse has previously penned School Reunion for Series 2, Series 5’s The Vampires of Venice, and last year’s hotel horror, The God Complex. His script is currently Ep 3 of Series 7, and “one of the final ones” to feature Amy and Rory.
Chibnall, meanwhile, whose previous episodes include The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood, is also writing an episode, which is said to feature one of the show’s biggest ever sets…
Filming for Series 7 begins on 20th February, and Steven Moffat recently described it as the biggest and the most ambitious series yet. Stick with us for the very latest news!

Glad to see Toby Whithouse coming back. He definitely penned some of the better single adventures.
Chibnall has done some of Torchwood’s better scripts if I recall, but THE/CB was a rather lackluster two-parter stuck in the middle of season 5. 42 was a pretty decent episode, so I won’t write him off completely.
What I really want is another episode by Neil Gaiman. If I could get a Gaiman episode every season I’d be the happiest whovian in the world.
And lets keep Matthew Graham away from the series this time. I think he’s used up his chances.
@Doctor Whom
I so love your name!
Anyway, glad to see Toby back at the drawing board but I’m also hoping for new people too. Where are some of the original writers?
And I’m curious, if Captain Jack is out there writing books with his sis, why can’t they try their hand at writing episodes?
Not that excited to hear their names, to be honest. Chibnal’s Silurian 2 parter was duff. I want exciting names, I want to hear Gaiman’s back; Rob Shearman. Whithouse has always done OKAY, God Complex was his best so far, but I don’t get excited by the prospect of an episode by him. I mean, Paul Cornell, get him back in! Fathers Day AND the Human Nature two parter and yet he’s not been back since series 3?? Come on!
i loved tobys god complex eipisode i hope he makes it clear what the doctor most feared behind the hotel room door am dieing to find out
@TWWL I certainly would love to be seeing some bigger names in there, but if that was going to happen I doubt they’d announce it right off the starting gate. Chibnall and Whithouse are only two names.
And I am excited for Toby’s next ep. God Complex was his best, and a really enjoyable single episode. I’m looking forward to seeing what else he has to bring to the table.
Personally, I’m alright with the writers lined up so far. John Fay’s proven himself with Torchwood, Toby Whithouse has always written good episodes (even if I still find School Reunion a bit iffy (I don’t hate it, but the Krillitane do make it hard to watch)) and I really don’t have any problem with Chris’ episodes as other people do. As long as the series as a whole manages to go back to the standard of Series Five, then I’ll be pleased.
Yes to Toby Whithouse but absolutely no to Chris Chibnall cold blood and the hungry earth were poor and 42 was average. toby however has written 3 superb episodes school reunion, vampires of venice and the god complex which all were superbly written, directed and acted.
