Gareth David-Lloyd has revealed that he feels Ianto Jones “will always deserve” to make a comeback on screens, saying the character is still “very close” to his heart.

The actor, who appeared in the first 3 series of Torchwood, told CultBox that he would definitely consider reprising the role if it was done properly. “It would depend on the script,” he explained. “But yes, I think so.” He also admits that it’s “wonderful” that the fans are still being moved by his character’s relationship with Jack.

About the latest series of the spin off, Miracle Day, which saw Jack and Gwen journey to the US, he said: “It’s great TV, but Torchwood for me will always belong in Cardiff…”

Torchwood’s future is unknown, as John Barrowman recently told fans to wait and see.

    I, for one, want to see him as the new companion to Matt Smith’s Doctor…… but then again I want to see Jason Statham as the Doctor…..

    Absolutely right, Torchwood will always be Cardiff, the Hub and the SUV. They’re its DNA for me.

    Ianto was part of that DNA, as were Toshiko and Owen.

    Always enjoy re-watching Series 1, 2 and Children of Earth.

    Ooh, would love Ianto to come back if it were done properly. And that’s such a boring thing to say, because it’s exactly what GDL said, but it sort of covers it. I’d hate to see Ianto dragged back without a proper explanation as to how he managed it. I wouldn’t mind him returning for a single episode, even, because can you imagine how beautifully emotional that ep would be? But it has to be done believably.

    @TSG
    I’d agree with that TSG. If they were going to bring him or the others back, they’d have to explain how their bodies survived the Torchwood Hub explosion, though Suzie’s did in one of the Miracle Day prequel novels.

    Next, they’d have to really think hard about how they did it. It’d have to be done properly and preferably quite intricately.

    If not, then just return to Cardiff or wherever and establish a new team that we can like.

    I absolutely agree. Torchwood in America? Seriously?
    I suppose they could do a flashback in an episode that focused on Jack’s character development…or some have him return in some sort of dream world–it would be both brilliant and heartbreaking to see Jack forced to choose between a life with his lover and saving the real world.
    In any case, bring it back to Cardiff!

    It would be great to see Ianto return. I’m just slightly hesitant about it though, because him returning might potentially ruin the beautifully emotional ending he had.

    Though while we’re on the subject of things being deserved, I think it’s fair to say we the fans deserved a lot more from Torchwood than Miracle Day. Send them back to Cardiff, build them a new hub and find them a new team. Even if it does include the ghost of Ianto floating around making coffee.

    Sorry I loved Ianto a lot but I don’t see them bringing him back believably short of announcing a twin or a double from another universe!
