Matt Smith has once again spoken out about his Doctor Who future, reaffirming that he won’t be leaving anytime soon.

The actor told What’s On TV that he has never considered leaving as he is too keen to be in the TARDIS for the 50th anniversary, which he is positive will be “one of the most monumental moments in TV history”. “I’m not an idiot,” he said. “I’m not going to leave Doctor Who in its biggest year ever.” He has previously said he hopes the show’s landmark celebrations are as “far-reaching” as possible.

A one-off BBC Two drama exploring the Who origins will be part of the big festivities.

    @Freddy Jones
    David Tennant only stayed for 3 series because he feared becoming typecast. Series 7 is Matt’s 3rd series, and people are probably thinking that he’ll do the same.

    I’m really looking forward to the 50th, hopefully there will be some episodes from each Doctor aswell as the BBC 2 drama.

    I think part of it, also, is that people like regenerations when it comes to the Doctor. The anticipation and speculation of who it will be, what that final story will be to cause him to regenerate and then the discovery of who it’ll be and adjusting to the new person.

    It’s just one of the biggest Doctor Who events and doesn’t necessarily reflect on the actor themselves or a specific desire to see them leave. I think sometimes people ask because they DON’T want to see Matt leave.

    If he does more than Tennant, that’s cool. When I can put aside my anger (for various reasons) with Moffat and actually watch the 11th Doctor, there is something about him that has potential because of the way Matt plays him.

    I have a feeling, or perhaps a hope, that what we’ll see in Series 7 will better highlight the 11th Doctor, who he is when more focus is put back on him.

    If he isn’t leaving during the 50th anniversary, presumably which will feature an epic story for the 11th Doctor, it could define him when Matt carries on afterwards, perhaps even define ALL the Doctors.

    I can’t wait to see the BBC 2 drama and I hope they bring back as many old characters as possible, heroes and villains alike. I’m pretty glad that Matt Smith isn’t leaving just yet because the 50th anniversary could well be the highlight of his Doctor Who career!
