Steven Moffat has revealed that Doctor Who feels “different” with Jenna-Louise Coleman as the Doctor’s companion.

The showrunner told SFX that “it’s surprising” how much the overall tone of the series changes as soon as a new co-star joins the TARDIS. “The Doctor is different with her and the way you watch them is different,” he further explained. “You saw the Eleventh Doctor and Amy arrive together – it is like they grew up playing in the same sandpit. With a different companion he becomes a slightly different man.”

He continued: “He even dresses differently. He is the senior man, training up a new one, as it were. At the moment the Doctor is practically the adopted son of Amy and Rory – a troublesome kid they try and keep under control. With the new companion he is back to being the mysterious wonderful Space Gandalf. It gives you the show at its most iconic.”

Series 7 continues on Saturday at 7:35pm on BBC One in Dinosaurs on a Spaceship.

    I have seen some wild theories about Jenna’s character. One of the strangest being she is the child of Lee Harvey Oswald!

    @Steve
    Someone seriously said that?

    I mean, I have little faith in Steven Moffat, but Jenna being the the daughter of the guy who killed JFK …. I wouldn’t know what to say really.

    I’m so afraid to see what’s going to happen. I love Rory, but Amy gets on my nerves. I’m glad that he’s going to be back to his awesome self, but I’m not so sure about the new companion. They just keep getting younger and younger and prettier and it’s sort of annoying.
    Come on, Moffat, write something with a woman who isn’t young and absolutely gorgeous. You’re becoming a bit… American.
    And I’m from America myself.

    Miss — you must not have seen the classic series. ;-) There was nearly always at least one young, attractive female traveling with the Doctor. Rare indeed were the times without a young, attractive female companion. And they could get pretty blatant about it: look at Leela or Peri and how many clothes they *didn’t* wear.

    arsra — this Doctor will always be awkward, because Matt Smith is awkward; they’re constantly having to fix things around the set that he’s accidentally broken. :-D

    I like the Ponds, but it really is time for them to leave. I feel that lately it’s been to much family drama, what with River and everything. Suddenly we had a soap opera version of Doctor Who, sort of… So I’m very, very excited about Jenna-Louise’s character and I think it’ll be great to see a new companion again!
