The Zygons will be back in the 50th anniversary special!

The shape-shifting aliens were first introduced to the series’ mythology in the Tom Baker serial Terror of the Zygons.

Their return in this year’s landmark episode was confirmed today when the BBC released a filming image of a new look Zygon out on location. Production for the episode, which will feature the return of David Tennant and Billie Piper, began today after the read-through took place last night.

The blockbuster episode will be shown in 3D on BBC One and in cinemas in November.

Guest stars in the story, which has “a lot of surprises”, are John Hurt and Joanna Page.

Zygons? Didn’t they bring Nessie back? Creative aliens! Good choice!

Ooooooh, Zygons! They were an excellent villain before, though I hope their voices are a bit more intelligible this time. For once, though, I’m actually not sure the updated costume is an improvement. The original was excellent, designed by the incomparable James Acheson (who later went on to earn multiple Oscars for his costume design, and who is also the guy who came up with the unmistakable Time Lord robes, with the crazy high collars forcing them to adopt a very regal gait and posture). Not bad, but a little chunky compared to the originals. Also, I sort of wish they could’ve worked in the bit that was in Acheson’s original concept but which they were unable to realize — he wanted to put lights inside the costumes to make them faintly luminous.

Well goodness. You’d think this Zygon could have smiled for the camera instead of that nasty sneer.

Wonderful to see the Z guys back in action!
