David Harewood says Who rumours are “amazing”

David Harewood has revealed he’s extremely flattered to be on the (ever growing) list of potential Twelfth Doctors.

The actor told Entertainment Weekly it’s “amazing” to be attached to the coveted role but insisted “it’s only rumours”. He admitted: “It’d be extraordinary if the BBC were to make me their first black Doctor”. And he’d be no stranger to the series, having played Joshua Naismith in The End of Time. “Yes, I was in David Tennant’s final episode,” he added. “So it would probably never happen anyway!”

Speculation about the next Doctor has been rife since the BBC announced at the start of the month that Matt Smith will be leaving in this year’s Christmas Special. It has since come to light that his (or her…) identity may not be made public until “early autumn”.

I think hes a great actor! Liked his character, Tuck in the modern tv series of Robin Hood and I think he’d be a great choice if people were more open minded of having a black Doctor not to say that they’re being close minded or being racist. Thats not what this comment is trying to say at all just so we’re clear :)

I don’t mind saying I really want another white Doctor. As you said Patrick, it’s not about being racist or close-minded, I would just be personally offended if they did change his race after so many decades and so many regenerations.

I mean, putting it another way, how would people feel if Idris Elber left Luther and they cast a white guy in the same role?…………or perhaps Freema Agyeman wouldn’t want to play Martha Jones anymore and they cast a white girl?

Neither of them would be any more right. I don’t like the way the whole conversation is going regarding changing the Doctor’s gender/race.

It’s the same with James Bond, although with them, they just changed Moneypenny’s ethnicity but that may be a slippery slope.

As with the Luther example, it’s really not racist or sexist or close minded, it’s just staying true to who a character is and their ethnicity is part of that.

It’s been established they could just as easilly change skin colour as hair colour during regeneration. Look at River Song. For me, it’s the very best man for the job; if that man happens to be black, then great. This role is not like any other, the charactes whole body changes, and that can, even though it hasn’t so far for The Doctor, include the skin colour. I don’t think you can try and use other roles as examples, because this character is unique and has a unique way of changing.

A perfect excuse for the ultra P.C BBC to make the change. I’d seriously consider not watching if they make such a decision.

Just a post to apologise for my angry response earlier, this is a touchy subject for me.

Whilst I do strongly feel the Doctor should remain a white man, in reality, I would try and tolerate a black or female Doctor if the BBC decided that was the direction they wanted to take the show, because I’m obviously a Doctor Who fan.

I think any actor that took part in such a radical change in the show would have a lot to prove though, both to me and the fanbase as a whole.

We all know it’s possible for him to change skin-colour.
I don’t think anyone is uncomfortable with it for any particularly bigoted reason, either.
