jenna-discusses-claras-future

Jenna Coleman has been discussing Clara Oswald’s future with the Doctor in a new interview with Digital Spy.

Promoting the complete Series 8 boxset, which is released in the UK tomorrow, the actress revealed that she doesn’t think her character “could go back to just having a normal life again”. The impossible girl was seen parting ways with the Time Lord at the end of the most recent episode, Death in Heaven, but we know she’ll be back at Christmas after she appeared in a preview clip from the special which was shown during Children in Need.

She expanded: “I think she’s addicted to him and the life and the TARDIS, so I don’t think there’s really a way back for her now. She’s had a taste of this life and him.”

It’s not the first time Jenna has remained tight-lipped about her involvement in Series 9, which is expected to begin filming in January. She has previously stated: “If you know I’m in the next series then you’ll know how the story ends. It’s much better if nobody knows.”

happy-51st-anniversary-doctor-who

Today is a special day in the Doctor’s personal calendar because it marks the anniversary of his first televised adventure, An Unearthly Child.

On this day back in 1963, at 5:16pm on BBC One, the TARDIS materialised on the small screen for the first time as viewers were given their first glimpse into the weird and wonderful world of the now iconic Time Lord.

51 years and over 800 episodes later, the series is still going strong with an estimated global audience of 70 million.

It’s also been exactly one year since The Day of the Doctor, the momentous adventure which was screened simultaneously on TV and in cinemas in over 90 countries. The 50th anniversary was a remarkable celebration and you can relive all of the festivities here.

The Doctor will be back on our screens next month but see how it all began for him below…

And he hasn’t stopped running since! Here’s to another 51 years, Doctor – we salute you!

bbc-director-hails-series-8-as-outstanding

The Director of BBC Television has hailed Peter Capaldi’s first series of Doctor Who as an “outstanding” triumph.

In a press release issued today, Danny Cohen added that he’s “very grateful to everyone involved” in the Twelfth Doctor’s debut adventures, which reached new levels of success at home and abroad.

Here in the UK, Series 8 attracted an average audience of 7.4 million viewers across its 12 week run, with an additional 18.9 million requests (1.6m average) on iPlayer.

“This an increase of 39% on the overnight figures reported the day after broadcast. This includes the 9.2m average audience that watched Deep Breath, Peter Capaldi’s debut episode, which is the highest figure for a non-special episode (Christmas/50th anniversary) since the opening episode of series 5 (Matt Smith’s debut) in 2010. These figures show how Doctor Who has consistently achieved big audiences across the last three series – series 7a/7b combined had an average consolidated audience of 7.4m, series 6a/6b attracted 7.5m and series 5 was viewed by 7.3m.”

Meanwhile, in the US, Deep Breath became BBC America’s highest rated series premiere to date, as Canada’s Space marked a 22% uplift in consolidated audience size on Series 7.

“We never take it for granted, but the miracle has happened again – the nation has taken a brand new Doctor to its heart.”

- Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer

The behind the scenes series Doctor Who Extra has had 1.3 million requests on iPlayer.

A huge congratulations to the cast and crew! We can’t wait to see what Christmas brings…

natalie-gumede-talks-christmas-special

Natalie Gumede has revealed that filming this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special “was a completely new realm” due to its heavy use of CGI.

The actress will guest star in the festive episode, the first trailer for which was aired after Death in Heaven, and told Radio Times that the role presented new challenges for her as an actress. “I just kind of sat at the sidelines in awe of all the special effects,” she said. “Normally you’re on a set and you’re on a street or in a kitchen in a house, but this time we were on a spaceship!”

She continued: It was a complete eye-opener and it’s made me a fan of Doctor Who. I have a new found respect for actors acting opposite CGI in rubber costumes and masks or against nothing, just a green screen. It’s s really challenging to make it real and human.”
