Patrick Ness has revealed that the Class narrative is largely driven by its characters, with the sci-fi element serving as the backdrop for their relationships and personal journeys.

The new Doctor Who spin off, which lands this weekend, will introduce us to an ensemble of sixth formers, the “mother hen” April, “baby of the group” Tanya, “football jock” Ram and Charlie, an “intergalactic prince” who is hiding out on Earth following the destruction of his home planet. Its creator and writer explained to i News: “Young Adult drama is all about teenage agency. Their concerns are taken seriously.”

He continued: “It’s not a show about an adult watching teenagers do stuff. So it is slightly to the side of Sarah Jane and Torchwood, but YA is always to the side. You couldn’t pretend it’s for teens when it’s actually for adults. If you do it correctly, it’s appealing for everyone.”

The premiere episode – For Tonight We Might Die – will feature a cameo appearance from Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor, however Patrick affirmed that viewers shouldn’t expect any further crossovers from the main show, adding: “I wanted to do something of my own. It’s part of the tapestry and universe, but it’s also got to work on its own terms.”

The first two episodes premiere on BBC Three at 10am on Saturday 22nd October.
