Who’loween Spooktacular 2016 – Scariest Scene!

October 18th, 2016

Halloween is just around the corner which means that it’s time for us to get into the spirit of the season once again with the return of our Who’loween Spooktacular!

Over the years our frightfully fun festivities have included a countdown of the Scariest Episode and the Scariest Enemy, both of which were taken home by the Weeping Angels with landslide majorities of the votes. In fact, we even held a rematch back in 2014 which they won again, so they really are the ones to beat. That could all change this year, though, as we bring you… the Scariest Scene!

But we need your help to find out what that is. Doctor Who is acclaimed for traumatising generations and, while there’s admittedly only so much it can get away with at 7pm on a Saturday night, it’s safe to say that the series has become progressively darker over recent years and it never shies away from pushing the boundaries of teatime telly to the extreme.

With that in mind, we want to know what YOU think has been the scariest scene in Doctor Who to date. It’s been on for over 50 years so you’re definitely not stuck for choice, but we’ve all got that one scene or sequence that caught us off guard and still succeeds in sending a shiver down our spine. All right, so there’s more than one. Narrow it down, ok?!

Your scene can be from any episode, from any series, from any Doctor, and all you have to do is post it in the comments below, or tweet us @WhovianNet. Next week we’ll open up a poll featuring your most popular suggestions for the final round of voting, which will close on Halloween. So, what are you waiting for, eh?! Leave your comments below, if you dare…

When I was younger I found a lot of the cliff-hangers on the Sarah Jane Adventures really scary! They terrified me, so maybe consider adding some SJA scenes on the poll?

But Doctor Who wise the scene that absolutely terrified me when I first watched it as a young kid and gives me chills to this day is the cliff-hanger for The Ultimate Foe, when the Doctor is on a beach and hands from the ground grab him, dragging him down while the Doctor shouts futilely “This is an Illusion!” and the Valeyard laughs! Out of fear I stopped watching classic Doctor Who clips online for a while!

And a pretty close second to that scary scene is the climatic showdown between the Master and The Doctor in Survival. Might seem a silly scene to others but watching it for the first time as a kid without much context it seemed epic, watching two people duke it out on a burning planet and the Doctor crying at the end “If we fight like animals we’ll Die like animals!” blew my mind and thrilled me! If you haven’t watched any of these scenes yet I strongly recommend you do!

I’d have to say in the Daemons when they tie up the Doctor and try to burn him alive. The combination of the Morris Dancers and the crowd watching makes everything super creepy.

The one with the whisper shows up at the conference call trying to get the doctor to trenzelor.

I don’t know that anyone would share this one, but the most disturbing Doctor Who moment for me was the end of Waters of Mars.

The way the 10th Doctor behaved was quite a moment for me. He was desperate, dangerous and arrogant. He strutted around, boasted about his power and said it was tough if people didn’t like it. For those few minutes, he projected the potential power he could wield as a Time Lord, proving Donna right when she said that somtimes he needed someone to stop him.

When I think about Doctor Who, nothing about it strikes me as particularly scary, but the way the Doctor turned like that at the end of that episode has definitely stuck with me.
