Warning! This article and its comments may contain spoilers...

It has been confirmed that Peter Capaldi will be leaving Doctor Who at the end of the year.

The announcement was made by the man himself during an appearance on Jo Whiley’s Radio 2 show earlier tonight (Monday), before an accompanying press release affirming the details of his exit was released online. After Series 10 airs this spring, the Time Lord will regenerate into the Thirteenth Doctor in this year’s Christmas Special, which will also be the last episode to be written by outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat.

“One of the greatest privileges of being Doctor Who is to see the world at its best,” Peter said. “From our brilliant crew and creative team working for the best broadcaster on the planet, to the viewers and fans whose endless creativity and generosity points to a brighter future ahead. I cannot thank everyone enough. It has been truly cosmic.”

As Steven also prepares to bid farewell to the “best job” he’ll ever have, he reassured fans by teasing that the Twelfth Doctor’s “greatest adventures are yet to come”, adding that, “Capaldi’s not done with you yet!” He continued: “Knowing that I’m leaving in the company of the best, kindest and cleverest of men makes the saddest of endings a little bit sweeter.”

So, there you have it! After a frenzy of speculation, the Twelfth Doctor’s time is running out. Will you be sad to see Peter go, or has his Doctor run his cause? And who should be his successor? Share your initial reactions to this breaking news in the comments below…

I am shocked to hear the announcement. I love Peter as the Doctor. He has brought the classic doctor’s back. I will miss him. Not looking forward to the next choice. Hard to top Peter.

It’s sad that Peter Capaldi is leaving, but I have to be honest and say that I’ve never been that interested in his Doctor.

He’s never had the same emotional impact as the others have had and I’ve felt like the 12th Doctor has just kept things ticking over, holding the fort. I haven’t always felt that way though. When he was announced, I had high hopes for a Doctor that was as powerful and had the same presence as Doctors 9-11, but in a completely different way. It just never materialised. The stories weren’t there and I was just saying to someone the other day that although I can remember iconic pieces of music from Series 1 to 7, as well as Torchwood, I can’t remember any of it from Series 8 onwards.

I am sad that my hopes for the 12th Doctor didn’t materialise, although I look forward to seeing what he does with his last series after a year off-screen, but I think it is time to move on. I just hope they’ll make the right choice with the 13th Doctor and allow me to reconnect with Doctor Who again.

This is sad news for me. I adore the 12th Doctor because through Capaldi’s energy he is so wonderful to watch yet for most of the time he has had the weakest stories the New Doctor Who series has had. I hoped he would stay around longer, it hasn’t felt long enough but all good things come to an end.

And it seems rather fitting that when I’ll start a new chapter in my life this year by going to University I’ll have a new Doctor there with me. And with the finale being Moffatt’s and Capaldi’s last they’re both sure to go out with a bang! And if we’re lucky he’ll come back in an Anniversary special, I can imagine it now, him looking at his future incarnation, saying some wonderfully witty and sarcastic line…

I find this so sad and unfair. The stories for season 8 and 9 were so weak and they buried Peter in the background for most of them. We finally got a small glimpse of what Peter’s Doctor could be in Heaven sent. I blame Moffat for this. He was burned out a long time ago and had bit off more than he could chew trying to run two shows. He didn’t give Peter the effort he deserved. I really think the BBC should reconsider and allow Peter to stay on even just one more season under the new show runner.

The best news ever, never liked Peter doctor, great actor but not a doctor, (only my humble opinion) now I’m only worried about the next doctor I’m not open for a woman doctor not at all, for me it would be the first time i will stop from watching this great show

Really don’t want to see him go. Love the old school take you brought to the show.
Totally love the righteous anger of the 12th Doctor.

@Gary No! Matt Smith was to childish!!

Sorry to see PC go. He never stood a chance with Moffat!! What’s worse if the BBC are debating the rating which have been falling under Moffat! They will not see it as Moffat’s fault but PC!!
He had glimpses of Peter Cushing in his character and could have been the best Doctor in this so called “Nu-Series” but we will never know!

I would have to say im disappointed he’s going already….but I think its because of the bad storytelling, PC is a great actor but they didn’t really give him good stories to work with…that and the fact they were putting the show on far too early. He had so much potential for the 12th Doctor, i’ve been a fan for a while but im not too sure I want to carry on with the quality of stories they have done lately

Love you Peter! Will be a sad day when you have left the show. However, i personally really liked the last series, much improved over the poor series 8. But that’s just my own opinion of it!
