Steven Moffat has teased that fans are in for “a real treat” when the Master returns to Doctor Who later this year.

Earlier this month it was confirmed that John Simm will be reprising his role as the renegade Time Lord, last seen on screen in 2010, during Series 10 to come face to face with his current incarnation, Missy, as played by Michelle Gomez. Speaking to Radio Times, the outgoing showrunner revealed that they’re “absolutely wonderful together” on screen. “They are hilarious,” he said. “It’s gorgeous. It was time for this tremendous meeting. John was so keen to come back.”

He continued: “I’ve always thought it would be fun to have a story where two versions of the Master meet. I’m sure everyone has thought about that at some point. But with Missy, you couldn’t have done it straightaway. You had to let her become the definitive iteration, as it were, and then you bring in John Simm. Luckily, he has always said he’d be up for it.”

The Pilot premieres on Saturday at 7:20pm and you can read our advanced preview here.
