The BBC has released a new candid publicity shot of Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor from this year’s Christmas Special.

TV’s favourite Time Lord will make his long overdue comeback to our screens on Christmas Day in The Return of Doctor Mysterio, and we can only assume that they’ve released this picture to remind us of what he looks like (it really has been that long…). We know it’s not much, but in a Doctor Who gap year, every little helps. We’ll be getting a new preview in a couple of weeks, though, so the dry spell is almost over…

xmas-special-title-and-preview-revealed

Christmas has come early for Doctor Who fans today as the BBC have given us our first taste of what lies ahead in this year’s long awaited festive adventure!

As previously reported, the seasonal escapade will feature the reintroduction of Matt Lucas as Nardole, exactly one year after his understated debut in The Husbands of River Song. The anticipated adventure now also has a name too, with its intriguing title – The Return of Doctor Mysterio – alluding to Justin Chatwin’s guest role as a superhero called Grant. It is written by Steven Moffat and directed by Ed Bazalgette.

And that’s not all! We’ve also been treated to a first look preview (they really know how to spoil us, eh?) which was delivered in the form of a special montage made up of clips and behind the scenes footage. It is guaranteed to leave you feeling all warm and tingly inside!

The episode – aptly billed as a “heroic special” – will be set in New York as the Doctor joins forces with an investigative journalist played by Charity Wakefield. Adetomiwa Edun, Logan Hoffman and Aleksandar Jovanovic also star. Let the countdown begin! Just 78 days to go…

The long-awaited series will premiere online on BBC Three on Saturday 22nd October 2016 with its first two episodes, For Tonight We Might Die and The Coach with the Dragon Tattoo. If that wasn’t exciting enough, Peter Capaldi himself will be appearing in the premiere episode as the Twelfth Doctor, marking the first time he’ll have appeared on our screens since last Christmas, owing to Doctor Who’s seemingly never-ending gap year. Not too shabby, eh?

Created and written by award-winning Young Adult fiction author Patrick Ness, Class stars Greg Austin, Sophie Hopkins, Fady Essayed and Vivian Oparah as sixth formers Charlie, April, Ram and Tanya, who kick off their brand new term at Coal Hill School with a bang when they come under attack by an unearthly force. But this is only just the beginning…

The latest Doctor Who Magazine is about to materialise and they’re taking a trip into the future to introduce us to our brand new TARDIS team!

Although Series 10 won’t actually hit our screens until 2017 (as if you need reminding!), it’s business as usual for the cast and crew who are working their little socks off in Cardiff – and, this week, Spain – to bring the Twelfth Doctor’s third string of adventures to life. They will introduce new companion Bill, as played by Pearl Mackie, and welcome back Matt Lucas’ Nardole from The Husbands of River Song.

Inside DWM #502, outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat and casting director Andy Pryor discuss what fans can expect from this exciting new dynamic, plus there’s the usual array of in-depth features, competitions, comics and more. In addition, the issue – which is on sale this Thursday (28th July), priced £5.99 – comes with 3 free posters and 4 art cards.
