The Series 10 finale, The Doctor Falls, was watched by an official audience of 5.3 million viewers in the UK.

Now that the consolidated figures have been released for all of the episodes, the series average has been calculated as 5.45 million, which is down on the averages for Series 9 in 2015 - 6.03 million - and Peter’s first series, Series 8, which averaged 7.4 million viewers in 2014.

As expected, this year’s highest rated episode was the series premiere, The Pilot, with 6.68 million.

As revealed at the end of last night’s Series 10 finale (and in keeping with recent tabloid reports…), this year’s Christmas Special will be a multi-Doctor adventure featuring David Bradley as the First Doctor.

The actor – who previously portrayed William Hartnell in the 50th anniversary biopic An Adventure in Space and Time – made his surprise appearance in the closing moments of The Doctor Falls, which saw the Time Lord’s current incarnation being taken in the TARDIS to an unknown location as his latest regeneration began. Cue the closing titles…

The festive adventure will be Peter Capaldi’s final episode as the Doctor, as well as Steven Moffat’s last story as showrunner, and it looks like they’ll both be going out with a mighty bang as the past, present and future collide… literally! But what did you make of the chilling cliffhanger, and what are your hopes and expectations for the Christmas Special?

3.75 million viewers tuned in for the Series 10 finale, The Doctor Falls, on BBC One last night, according to the overnight ratings.

A 25.3% share of the total television audience watched the extended climactic episode, which marked Peter Capaldi’s penultimate adventure as the Twelfth Doctor. Doctor Who was the third highest rated programme of the day, behind Casualty (4.05 million) and The Voice Kids (3.90 million).

Final ratings will be available next week.

The BBC Media Centre has released the official synopsis for the Series 10 finale, The Doctor Falls, which will air on Saturday 1st July.

The penultimate episode to be written by Steven Moffat, the final has been extended to 60 minutes and is directed by Rachel Talalay.

The Mondasian Cybermen are on the rise. It’s time for the Doctor’s final battle…

And yes, that’s really not a lot to go on. But the less we know about this one, the better…
