Karen Gillan has revealed that she’s positive Jenna-Louise Coleman will “have the best time ever” when she joins the series later this year as the new companion.

The Amy Pond actress, who’ll be leaving the show alongside Arthur Darvill as her on-screen husband Rory in Series 7, told BBC America: “She will enjoy every second of it. She’ll have the best time ever. She is going to really like working with Matt. I think it will just be the most amazing experience. You can’t even describe it to anyone.”

Karen added that her only advice for Jenna would be to simply “go for it”. “I want to leave her to have the experience,” she said. “I’m not going to push any advice on her.”

steven-warns-that-tragedy-awaits-in-new-york

Steven Moffat’s sent out a warning to fans to prepare them for the “tragedy” that awaits the Doctor, Amy and Rory when they journey to New York in the new series.

The cast and crew are currently over in America filming on location in the city for the fifth episode of Series 7, which will feature the departure of Amy and Rory. Speaking to BBC America at last month’s official Convention in Cardiff, the showrunner teased: “Oh, there will be tragedy in New York. There will be Weeping Angels there too.”

He explained that bringing the statues back for “a final encounter” with the Ponds in the Big Apple “seemed to make sense”, and added that they plan to make full use of the city’s iconic landmarks. “We’re not just going to go there and film in a back street that we could film in Cardiff,” he said. “It’s just that this is a different backdrop for the story.”

Matt Smith took a break from signing autographs and posing for photos at last month’s official Convention to speak to the Independent about all things Doctor Who.

Regarding Series 7, which is currently being filmed, he said: “It’s really great. We’ve some exciting episodes, and we did the read throughs for episodes one and five, and they are both extremely extraordinary.” The latter will be Amy and Rory’s final episode, featuring the Weeping Angels, which Matt promises will be “incredible”.

Scenes for the Ponds’ exit story are to be shot on location in New York, something Matt is “incredibly” excited about. The interview then moves onto discuss the casting of Jenna-Louise Coleman as the Doctor’s next companion. “Of course I’m very sad to lose Karen and Arthur, but the show is about change. I think she’s a wonderful actress,” he explained. “She did brilliantly in the audition. She’s going to offer a lot to the part.” Jenna makes her debut in this year’s Christmas episode, which films in May.

Finally, Matt discusses his own future in the TARDIS, reassuring fans that he is “not going anywhere any time soon.” “I’ve got another series to make yet,” he said. “Then we’ve got a Christmas Special and the 50th anniversary. I’ve got loads of Who to do.”

“I have an idea of the story, of the character and of a few of the surprises,” she explained. “But I don’t know her name or where she is from. I just told Steven Moffat and Caroline Skinner, ‘Don’t tell me anything until I need to know.” She also discusses the pressure of keeping it all under wraps.

Her top secret auditions were hidden under the title of Men on Waves, which is an anagram of Woman Seven. She said: “I wasn’t allowed to say that it was for Doctor Who at any point. When you keep a secret this big, the temptation is all the more irresistible.”

Matt Smith was a guest on Roy Noble’s BBC Radio Wales show earlier today, and during the interview he discussed this week’s announcement that Jenna-Louise Coleman will be joining the series as the Doctor’s new companion.

“It’s very, very exciting news,” he said. “I was part of the audition process, and we met a number of wonderful actresses, but I think Jenna just responded to Steven Moffat’s writing in the most interesting way. We can’t wait to welcome her to the Doctor Who family.”

Coleman will be introduced in her new role in this year’s Christmas Special, and said at a press conference yesterday that it is “a huge privilege” to be awarded the part.

He also looks ahead to the first official Doctor Who Convention, at which he’ll be a guest, taking place in Cardiff this weekend. He explained: There will be be TARDIS tours, and me, Karen, Arthur and Steven Moffat will be there to sign memorabilia and have photos. There will also be all the monsters and costumes and things. It’ll just be all things Doctor Who really. It brings us all closer together. It’s always great to meet fans.”
