David Harewood has contributed to the ongoing Thirteenth Doctor discussions by suggesting that the next incarnation of the Time Lord should be “black or female”.

‘It needs to do something different this time, just to bring a new flavour to it,” he told BBC News. “Someone like Tilda Swinton would be a good choice. She’s extraordinary, so she’d be great. Maybe it’s what the show needs.”

The actor is no stranger to the world of Doctor Who, having guest starred in The End of Time back in 2009.

He also found himself in the running to be Matt Smith’s successor in 2013, which he said at the time was an “amazing” compliment. He added: “Who knows what’s going to happen?”

so-should-the-next-doctor-be-a-female

It’s the question that’s dominating Whovian discussion all over the world, and just about every other discussion, too.

Following last month’s shock announcement that Peter Capaldi will be leaving Doctor Who in this year’s Christmas Special, our attention has already turned to who will or might be cast as his successor, despite the fact he’ll be sticking around for another 13 episodes.

And, of course, amidst the flurry of potential candidates, the inevitable debate has once again been sparked…

Should the Thirteenth Doctor be a female? Well, Ladbrokes certainly seem to think so – they currently have 7/2 odds on it being Oscar winner Tilda Stinton, and the campaign for a Time Lady has recently been backed by former companion Billie Piper who thinks sticking with tradition would “be a snub”. But what do YOU think? We’d love to hear your opinions on the matter at hand, so vote in the poll below and be sure to join the friendly debate in the comments section. Hopefully it will give us an idea of the general consensus, if there even is one! Either way, it’s a topic that will keep us all talking for the foreseeable…

chris-chibnall-discusses-casting-the-next-doctor

Chris Chibnall has refused to confirm or deny whether or not he intends to cast a female as the Thirteenth Doctor.

Responding to the continuing speculation that the Time Lord will be changing gender when he takes over for Series 11 next year, the incoming showrunner told the Telegraph that the role will simply be given to the “best person for the part”. “We’ll cast it in the traditional way,” he explained. “You cant’t go out and cast an abstract idea. The creative possibilities are endless, but I have a very clear sense of what we’re going to do, without even knowing who’s going to play the part.”

Tilda Swinton is the current bookies’ favourite. She takes the top spot from Tom Weston-Jones who emerged as a possible successor a year before Peter’s exit was announced.

Tilda Swinton has emerged as the new bookies’ favourite to be cast as the 13th Doctor, as the Independent reports.

As the campaign for a female Doctor intensifies, recently backed by former companion Billie Piper, the Oscar winning actress is hotly tipped to take over the role of the iconic Time Lord when it’s vacated by Peter Capaldi later this year.

She currently has 7/2 odds on Ladbrokes, with other female contenders including Olivia Colman (5/1), Maxine Peake (8/1) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (12/1).

Ok, so Peter Capaldi hasn’t even left yet, but it’s practically impossible to avoid all of the ongoing speculation surrounding his successor, so we thought we might as well get involved!

Besides, it’s been a hot topic of conversation since before his departure was even announced, with Tom Weston-Jones emerging as a very early favourite to take over the TARDIS back in January of last year. Now that Peter’s exit is an undeniable reality, though, the time has come once again to put forward who you think would make for a reputable replacement.

And where do you even begin? In the build up to the Thirteenth Doctor’s unveiling, it’s safe to say that every name under the sun will be put forward as a potential candidate, and it would seem that the sky’s the limit when it comes to predicting an incoming Time Lord.

Don’t worry, though, because here is where you can discuss and dissect your pick of dream Doctors, from the realistic to the downright bonkers. Whether it’s wishful thinking or if you genuinely believe your choice has got what it takes to become our latest defender of the universe, let us know who has already got your vote in that there comments section below.

Should the new Doctor be an established actor or a relatively unknown? Billie Piper has joined the campaign for a female Doctor by saying that casting a woman in the iconic role would be a “timely” move by the BBC.

Following the announcement that Peter Capaldi will be handing over the keys to the TARDIS this Christmas, the Rose Tyler actress was asked whether or not she would ever consider taking on the momentous mantle of the Time Lord. “I don’t know,” she told BBC News. “It’s a lot of work. But I think it would be great to have a female Doctor, especially given the spirit of the world at the moment.”

She added: “I’ve always said that I support the show’s original format, but then I honestly don’t know where they can take it from here. It would be a snub at this point, I think.”

maisie-backs-idris-elba-as-next-doctor

Maisie Williams, who guest starred in Series 9 of Doctor Who as Ashildr, has revealed who she would like to see cast as the Thirteenth Doctor.

Speaking to the Evening Standard at their British Film Awards, where the Game of Thrones actress was named as this year’s Rising Star, the actress called for a black actor to take on the role of the Time Lord’s next incarnation, citing Idris Elba as her preferred choice. “I’m all for Idris,” she said. “I think he would be really cool. A female Doctor would be incredible, too. I would definitely take it for the team!”

This isn’t the first time that the Luther actor has been put forward to fulfil the guise of scifi’s most iconic hero. Back in 2013 he was a bookies’ favourite to take over from Matt Smith and responded to the press speculation by saying that he was “proud” to even be considered. With rumours that Peter Capaldi will be stepping down after Series 10 next year, Tom Weston-Jones has also recently entered the equation as a potential successor.

early-13th-doctor-favourite-emerges

Peter Capaldi hasn’t even announced his departure yet but already a (very) early favourite has emerged to take on the role of the Thirteenth Doctor in Doctor Who.

Tom Weston-Jones, who is currently appearing in the BBC’s Dickensian drama, is the first actor to have his name put forward as the incumbent Time Lord’s replacement, who will reportedly take over the TARDIS alongside incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall for Series 11 in 2018. Persistent reports suggest that Series 10, to air next spring after this year’s Christmas Special, will be Peter’s last.

This is all mere speculation at the moment, of course, but what do you think of Tom as the first frontrunner? Are there any other actors or actresses you’d like to see take on the role?
