Children of Earth Discussion: Day Five

July 10th, 2009

coe_day_5_discussionThe spectacular Children of Earth finale, Day Five, has just finished on BBC One and BBC HD and, while it’s sad to see it go, all good things must come to an end and tonight Torchwood bowed out in true Torchwood style with plenty of drama, shocks, tears, and, well, everything you’d ever expect to see in a series finale!

But it’s been a blast, hasn’t it? Whether you loved it or loathed it, it’s definitely been one hell of a ride… Jack died (several times over), all the children of the world stopped and chanted in perfect unison (several times over), Gwen found out she was with child (several times ov- oh, wait…), the Hub exploded… and that was just on Day One!

It feels like only yesterday we were sitting down to watch the first episode, but tonight it was the end of the road as Torchwood was left defenceless in the final instalment of what’s been a truly incredible and thought-inducing television event.

What are your thoughts on Day Five, and of the series as a whole? Were you pleased with how the story ended, or were you left disappointed with its conclusion? Feel free to share your finale reactions, and your favourite/least favourite moments of the series, by leaving a comment on this post - but beware of the almighty spoilers!

Loved it, am really sad! Jack’s gone, Gwen’s pregnant and no Ianto. There’s lots to come, i can smell it! No but on the whole, fantastic. But S4?…

Thanks for being here for all 5 nights Whoviannet…. its been great to come here after each night to talk about it.

Tonight for me, while i did think last night was most chilling, tonights episode really got to me. As a father myself, the image of the children being rounded up and taken was just too heartbreaking for words.

It was again, especially sad as Jack sacrificed his own Grandson to save the planet, essentially doing exactly what the government was planning on, a small sacrifice to save the rest of us. But what the cost?

I hope there is more Torchwood… even if it’s just Gwen rebuilding a team, although the world of Torchwood has been shattered forever now i suppose.

One thing that bugged me though: when the children screamed and repelled the 456, why did the soldiers stop their mission? How did they know the aliens were gone? Ok, maybe the ones in London would have figured it out, but there’s no way the ones in Cardiff would have seen the flame leaving. Yet they just stood there. Really disctracted me that.

What a fantastic five hour extravaganza. Children of Earth really was amazing, and far more exciting and moving than I expected. Bittersweet, as I feel it was Torchwood’s swansong. How could there possibly be a S4? Maybe I’m wrong.

To echo Mass’s comment - Thanks WhovianNet - It’s been great to be able to post comments here all week.

I forgot to mention - most disturbing scene? Frobisher goes home…

If Capaldi doesnt get a Bafta i’ll eat a Weevil

RTD lies and that is all he ever did lie and I’m sure thats it for torchwood

  6. July 10th, 2009 at 22:21 | #6

Yeah, Peter Capaldi has been utterly amazing. As has Eve Myles. She has been outstanding this week. I hope I’m wrong but I think all the talk about S4 in the last couple of weeks was a smokescreen. I think the only thing that could change this is the excellent ratings COE has achieved.

  7. July 10th, 2009 at 22:36 | #7

I thought COE was amazing….UNTIL THEY KILLED IANTO! I am sorry but I have to say this.. RTD HAS DESTROYED TORCHWOOD! Was there any need for Ianto to die? Was there any need for that ending? Was there any need for Jack to KILL his own GRANDCHILD! Was there was need for Torchwood to be destroyed? TBH, I’m doubtful if there will be a fourth Series, but I really don’t see how they can pick up the pieces after this.

Sadly, I struggle to see the reasoning behind this finale. I must be missing something here. At first I thought that Ianto’s death would fuel Jack to go all out and blow the bad aliens out of their poisonous little fish tank, even something to prove that the aliens were all bark and no bite. That didn’t happen and as much as I love Torchwood, I hated this ending. If they did make anymore episodes, I don’t think I’ll be tuning in.

Fantastic! RTD, John Fay and James Moran have come up with some fantastic twists for the storyline of this year’s series: Jack killing his Grandson, the 456 releasing the Virus, Ianto’s death, etc. I just hope the three were part of the writing team for Series Four also.

    @Mass
Agreed. Such a sad ending for a character who was beginning to redeem himself for his past actions, but the overlapping dialogue from Bridget made the scene moving.

Should have mentioned how wrong Jack was for killing his own Grandson, there’s no reason for the writers to use that. There were plenty of other ways to do it but instead they show a young lad being sacrificed without knowing what the hell he was getting involved in and I thought it was disgusting. Sorry but I’m a mum, I didn’t think that was right at all.

    @Gemma
But think about how worse it was for Alice to have to watch her father kill her son and have to live knowing that she was always right about not letting Jack get involved in her life.

Also, there were only two options: they use a child to destroy the 456 permanently, or give up most of the Children of Earth to the 456 who would return again in another 44 years.

Not sure that I “liked”" the ending, but it certainly kept me hooked, and had some thought provoking moments. Shame Ianto died, and the scene with Capt. Jack sacrificing his grandson was horrible, but compelling.
I gotta say: I think Jack did what he could, kill one child to save millions, but what a choice to make! Felt sorry for Jack and his daughter, and of course the kid, but this series has always showed that life isnt a bed of roses.
Agreed with MASS re; the soldiers standing about. Stupid, that…

It wasn’t the best of all finales, but the most disturbing thing i think was when John Frobischer shot his family..

Russell T Davies has made a huge mistake, killing of Ianto, making Jack dissapear, and well..what else does the future hold for Torchwood?

Overall, it was one of those episodes where your gripped from the start. Fantastic piece of drama yet. Next week won’t be the same.

It’s a shame we couldn’t actually see 456,instead of just seeing it’s tentacles..or whatever they are.

  15. July 11th, 2009 at 12:17 | #15

I really hope the BBC and RTD will clarify what is happening with the future, if there is one, of Torchwood as soon as possible. All this speculation (mostly my own I admit) is annoying.

On a side note: I overheard three little old ladies in M&S this morning talking about… Torchwood! Weird but true.

    July 11th, 2009 at 13:23 | #16

So we didn’t even se the 456! Dissapointing.

  17. July 11th, 2009 at 15:24 | #17

    I didn’t like it.

When any episode of Torchwood ends, I start laughing hysterically, even if Ianto has just died. When this one ended, I stood up and said “Right, I’m going to bed, then.”

There were a few major mistakes in this episode. The first was one Mass has already mentioned, i.e. how the soldiers knew to stop taking the kids. The second was that last little epilogue. It took the drama out of the ending for me. In my humble opinion, the episode should have ended with Jack walking out those double doors. Thirdly, I think Torchwood has finally gone too far. That little boy, shuddering and shaking, with blood pouring from his brain was just too harrowing.

I don’t think there will be any more Torchwood. I think the BBC is killing off its more expensive dramas; both Robin Hood and Torchwood have just kicked off all their main characters. Robin Hood is expensive due to the sets and the location filming, Torchwood due to the CGI and pyrotechnics. Yes, the BBC is feeling the effects of the recession.

Anyway. In agreement with several people above, Peter Capaldi was amazing. No, beyond amazing. He definitely deserves a Bafta for that performance. And Eve Myles was brilliant as always. And John Barrowman wasn’t as cheesy as he normally is. These last two eps have been his best, possibly along with Fragments for his part in Tosh’s story. And Gareth David-Lloyd got out before it went downhill.

So. Best part of Torchwood s3? These comment discussions. Thank you WhovianNet!!

Incredible final part. Tied up all the loose ends perfectly. Wasn’t too impressed with the end of the final part though. The hub destroyed, the weevils gone, Jack gone, Gwen pregnant, Ianto gone, the likelihood of a fourth series is hanging on a loose thread. =(

They’re not tentacles: they’re three trunk-like pipes, one attached to each head, hence the reason why there are three of them.

Oh no that was so believeable! realy got to me. When his hands were shaking as he loaded up the gun i got so freaked out because it was so well acted. It was a moment where you realise what was going to happen and go “Noooooo!!!”

I wish i hadn’t watched day 4 or 5 tbh. I have been crying for most of today because it has dawned on me that Ianto isn’t going to come back, Jacks run off and the future for torchwood looks so bleak! I watched day 4 on friday because i didn’t have time the day before and then watched day 5 straight after because i thought there would be a bit in it that made it all alright. whenever an episode of doctor who ends, even if the best characters have gone or something realy sad has happened, the world has been saved and the doctor still lives on. What makes me so sad is that although the world was saved, it seemed like it wasn’t worth it really and i guess thats what makes torchwood different.
oh I’m just so gutted. it really effected me and I’m sure that was what RTD was aiming for coz now I’m just gunna go out and buy series 1 and 2 so that i can watch all the slightly better times and pretend series 3 didn’t happen :-)
RIP Ianto (he is now my desktop wallpaper)

Some people just aren’t happy at what RTD writes. They say no don’t push that reset button no you will ruin it. He doesn’t do it and makes the best ending for torchwood and they still don’t like it. Whovians must be the hardest fans to please

Ok, here I go! My rant time :p
First of all, the finale was made so well that I could not take my eyes of the bluddy TV.

But, I have to say that after watching CoE I plan to never watch Torchwood again and do hope that it doesnt come back in the future.
The way that the kids were taken was just to much for my liking, everything about it was just to horrid for me!

Further more my oppinon about the character of Captain Jack had changed 100%, he is’nt this amazing man who saves the Earth, he is one big coward who hides behind big guns and the fact he can not die.

Just horrid. Simple as. The BBC trying to get viewers by using a sensitve issue such as children, disgraceful.
    0 out of 10. Simple.

    July 12th, 2009 at 21:12 | #25

how because he used his grandson. What would you have done? Let them take the 10% and then they would have left us alone. No because they would go back in years time and ask for 20%. And they would keep doing it until one day one small day they come and they take every child on the planet.

Taking this from a friend of mines Jack made the best decision that he could have at that moment. A hero isn’t a person who makes a popular choice. A hero is a person who makes the best decision he can regardless of what other people make of them. That is Jack, he is a man we know only a bit and this is another side of him

No, I dont think he is a hero at all! I now think he is one big coward, he didnt even try and talk to Alice after and always seems to leave when the going gets touch?!

i just finished watching day 5 on youtube.. since i’m over here in texas. and… I LOVED IT!!!! and jack didn’t speak to his daughter.. cause what the heck is going to say? sorry???!!! come on… there was nothing he could say to her. he sacrificed his grandson to save MILLIONS of children. he made a very very hard choice. i think jack need to spend sometime with the doctor.

Anybody think that this ending where he turns away from the world and starts blaming himself for everything has anything to do with him becoming the face of bo? it’s a silly idea and I dunno whether it’s been explained before in the doctor who episode when he tells him about the master and dies and i missed it.

To be fair Alice walked away from Jack. I do believe Jack had a hard decision to make and he had to do what it was right. I dont like the fact that he is a coward and running away from Gwen

My husband and I loved the series, but it all started to fall apart for us at the end. The acting was extremely well done, Eve and Peter just rocked every scene they were in. The person I ended up feeling the most dilemna for Forbisher. We loved the minimal special effects, the haunting voices of the stilled children. Gwen being pregnant and her relationship with both Rhys and Jack was very moving.

However, by episode 3 or 4 we were like no freaking way with what the government was doing and the supposed representation of the US and world governments.

The problem with the series is it cannot continue to be a snapshot of something resembling our world. The world of Torchwood is too changed.

No way in hell would people trust any government, the UN (not that we ever do anyhow), hell, anyone in charge. The world would still be reeling from the blood, riots and just flat out chaos.

I felt cheated by the whole 6 months later thing as well.
