David Tennant has revealed that he was thrilled when he first read the scripts for his final episodes, and has every confidence that his Doctor’s swansong will live up to - and maybe even exceed - everybody’s expectations.

Speaking to BoingBoing alongside Russell T Davies, the actor joked that he was ultimately worried that the head writer might not be able to live up to the scale of the episode. Naturally, being such a well-loved British icon, the Doctor regenerating is a huge television event, even if you’re not necessarily an avid follower of the show, and it’s safe to say that Russell had a mighty task at hand when the time came for him to pen the Tenth Doctor’s regeneration two-parter. But David acknowledged that the upcoming specials are some of the outgoing showrunner’s finest work to date.

“It was funny because it’s always been my favourite part, when a new script arrives, and you find out where you’re going next,” the actor told the website. “And this is the last one, this has got to be special, y’know? And, what if the inspiration runs out, or what if it can’t quite match the expectation? But I should’ve never have doubted Russell, of course! It was all there, and it’s sad.”

He added: “It’s very exciting, it’s thrilling, and it does new things to the show that haven’t been done before and that’s very exciting. There are revelations that you don’t see coming, and there are just beautiful moments of humanity.”

“There’s some very sustained dialouge scenes,” Russell continued, “between David Tennant and Bernard Cribbins. It’s as big and as strong as all the monsters and spaceships and fighting and explosions, but it’s just two men sitting together - two old men, both as wise as each other, but what do they think about the world, and life, and death?”

Meanwhile, David went on to divulge that the plot for the next special, The Waters of Mars, pushes the boundaries of Saturday night teamtime viewing, admitting that it’s “as down right creepy and gothic as we’d go”. But Russell added that some of the Master’s actions in the Christmas special might just raise a few eyebrows, too…

“Some of the stuff the Master gets up to on Christmas Day is going to be pushing it,” he laughed, before concluding, “I thought we’d push it right towards the end…”

The next special, The Waters of Mars, is due to air in November, with the first part of the Tenth Doctor’s regeneration two-parter transmitting on Christmas Day. It’s thought that his extended final episode, The End of Time, will follow in the New Year. Stick with us!
