Doctor Who and Torchwood go head-to-head

September 7th, 2009

eve_myles_gwen_torchwoodITV has announced the longlist for the 15th National Television Awards, and Doctor Who is set to go head-to-head with its very own spin off, Torchwood, in the Most Popular Drama category!

But only a handful of the programmes featured will make it to the final shortlist, and both shows face fierce competition from the likes of Merlin (BBC), Primeval (ITV), Holby City (BBC), and Little Dorrit (BBC).

Meanwhile, David Tennant will battle it out for the Most Popular Drama Peformance gong for his portrayal of the Tenth Doctor, and he’s up against John Barrowman and Eve Myles for their respective peformances as Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper in Torchwood.

Also featured in the category is Martha Jones actress Freema Agyeman, who is up for her role as Alesha Phillips in ITV’s Law & Order: UK, and Alex Kingston, who appeared as River Song in Series 4’s Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, is longlisted for her appearance as Ellie Lagden in the BBC series, Hope Springs.

So, whether you’ll be supporting Doctor Who, Torchwood, or one of its related stars, it’s time for Whovians and Woodies alike to join forces! Make sure you hop over to the official website and get your votes in by 30th September to make sure we get at least something from the Whoniverse in to the final shortlist of nominees! Happy voting!

The shortlist will be released next month, and then voting will reopen for the final winners from each category to be determined. The results will be revealed at the ceremony which will be broadcast on ITV1 live from the O2 Arena in January 2010, hosted by the X Factor’s Dermot O’Leary.

    With a lineup like that, the Whoniverse will rule. Yay!

    The others dont stand a chance do they?! XD
    Doctor Who has my vote, as much as I adore Torchwood, it would be nothing without the main article! :)

    I actually think Torchwood will get it this year. Just for the sheer dominace it performed in ratings and reviews. I dont even know why dr who is nominated. All we have had since last years awards is The Next Doctor and Planet of the Dead

    But still. I voted for Doctor Who as best drama, just because for me, it is. I didn’t even think about which episodes I was considering. Maybe that was the wrong thing to do. However, I did vote for Eve Myles over David Tennant (and I feel like a traitor for admitting that) just for her brilliant portrayal of human emotion. Obviously, that’s something David Tennant doesn’t get a huge chance to do!

    @TSG
    I did the exact same thing! I voted for Dr Who for Best Drama, but the I voted Eve Myles for Best Actress. She definitely deserves it for her acting in Children of Earth, and we all know David Tennant is amazing even if he doesn’t get an award ;]
