John Simm: “It’s a hell of a way to go”
John Simm appeared on the Jonathan Ross radio show this morning to promote the play Speaking in Tongues, which he is currently starring in at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London. But the interview wouldn’t have been complete without a mention of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas specials - David Tennant’s last - which will see the actor returning in the role of the Master.
“Ooh, he’s back all right!” Simm teased. “I can’t tell you [what happens] - the producers are sweating now listening to this! But it’s fantastic, it was such fun to do, and it’s brilliant to be asked to go back and play that character again, and Russell has written these amazing scripts, because obviously they’re David’s last hurrah as the Doctor.”
He added: “It’s a hell of a way to go though. It’s a great, great couple of episodes.”
He went on to reveal a few extra tidbits regarding the anticipated two-parter (”Ooh, it’s a two-parter all right!”), and as far as he’s aware, the first instalment will transmit on, as was already regarded, Christmas Day, and the second, The End of Time, will follow on January 1st 2010…
“It’s Christmas Day and, I think, New Year’s Day,” he said. “I’ve never been on Christmas Day before - I’m very excited! And it’s called The End of Time, so no pressure there then for the new Doctor!”
When asked by Ross if he had bumped into any other of the show’s stars during his time filming the story, Simm said: “[John Barrowman] was sniffing around on the set, but I didn’t get any scenes with him this time. I did last time. Last time I got to kill him about 13 times because he never dies does he?”
So, Captain Jack won’t meet the Master again, but it’s safe too say that the Tenth Doctor will come face to face with his arch-nemesis once more (it is his regeneration story, after all…), and Simm is full of nothing but praise for David Tennant, labelling him “officially the nicest man in the world”.
“He’s a brilliant, brilliant, brilliant Doctor,” he finished. “He’s just been wonderful.”
David Tennant’s last episodes will air at the end of the year, after The Waters of Mars in November.
“John Barrowman sniffing around on set” - Charming! lol! Can’t wait for these episodes though. JS has really wet my whistle now.
John Simms has always been a great Master. I hope he is better this time than last time just to make his master the best there has been. This is going to be the greatest episode of who as ever and hopefuly John will return in who history as the master
I am made up he has been brought back. He was a brilliant master but the series 3 finale will go down as the most disappointing series climax (yes i am aware this may provoke some debate) and this time he has a bigger story to work with…whatever that may be
That’s high praise: “officially the nicest man in the world”! Oh, I can’t wait for the Master’s return. He’s definitely the best villain ever. Including the Daleks and Davros. Because you can be laughing with him one minute, and then be horrified at him the next. You don’t get that variation, that light and shade with other villains. It gets monotonous.
Il ritorno del Master bello?Sta volta non mi perdo nulla!
