Sarah Jane launch date confirmed!

September 16th, 2009

doctor_sarah_jane_s3_sjaThe latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine (#413) confirms the launch date for the anticipated third series of The Sarah Jane Adventures!

The magazine reveals that the next series of the Doctor Who spin off will officially kick off on BBC One on Thursday 15th October 2009 at 4:25PM, but the start of the new series brings with it an exciting new format too!

Sarah Jane and the gang will return in part one of Prisoner of the Judoon by Phil Ford, and the opening story will continue on Friday 16th October.

The series will follow this new transmission pattern for its entire six week run, which basically means that Sarah Jane will be on BBC One twice a week - on Thursday and Friday afternoons - until the series reaches its climax in November. This also means that the next episode won’t get its traditional premiere over on the CBBC Channel, and instead, everybody will be watching each episode for the first time on BBC One!

The complete schedule for the third series of The Sarah Jane Adventures can be seen below:

Prisoner of the Judoon (Part 1) - Thursday 15th October
Prisoner of the Judoon (Part 2) - Friday 16th October
The Mad Woman in the Attic (Part 1) - Thursday 22nd October
The Mad Woman in the Attic (Part 2) - Friday 23rd October
The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith (Part 1) - Thursday 29th October
The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith (Part 2) - Friday 30th October
The Eternity Trap (Part 1) - Thursday 5th November
The Eternity Trap (Part 2) - Friday 6th November
Mona Lisa’s Revenge (Part 1) - Thursday 12th November
Mona Lisa’s Revenge (Part 2) - Friday 13th November
The Gift (Part 1) - Thursday 19th November
The Gift (Part 2) - Friday 20th November

So, without much further ado - let the countdown commence!

    Well, at least we won’t have a chance to forget how the story started a week ago. :)

    I think this will work well and the effect wont be as deflating if we don’t have to wait a whole week. Ive just calculated the dates of the series (if this format sticks). The wedding of SJA (Which DT is in) will transmit on 29 & 30th october so TWOM may air the following weekend…

    @pirko
    RTD has said that The Waters of Mars won’t be ready until after Halloween ;)

    My only problem with this new format is that series will go too fast and the events will easily be forgotten in the gap until the next set of repeats, following the finale. The good thing about Children of Earth being in one week was that the DVD came out the next week, so if you wanted to see it again, you easily could do it legally.

    DVDs only come out quickly if the BBC aren’t trying to get people to remember it, as a general rule. For example, we had to wait months for the Robin Hood boxsets of series 1 and 2, but after series 3 (widely believed to be the last series), the boxset came out two days after the finale aired. They were capitalising on momentum, which they knew would quickly be lost. With Sarah Jane and Doctor Who, which fans generally believe (at least subconsciously) to last forever, they have no need to do that, so they drag it out. We get better extras, but slower.

    @TSG
    Robin Hood was axed a few days after the third series finished ;)

    Exactement. I’m glad it was, too. Well, they could hardly carry on without Robin Hood, could they? Or the Sheriff of Nottingham. Or Guy of Gisbourne. Or Maid Marian (though they managed that for an entire series).

    About time too, I didn’t like the previous series(s) time slot format..
