John Simm talks the Master’s sanity in new interview

November 12th, 2009

the-master-series-3John Simm has revealed that he pulled out all the stops to make his portrayal of the Master as menacing as possible while filming the Doctor Who Christmas specials.

The actor told the Daily Mail that his behaviour in the Series 3 finale is nothing compared to some of the things he’ll be getting up to when he returns to our screens as the Doctor’s arch-nemesis next month!

“If you thought I was hamming it up in the last one, wait till you see this,’ he enthused. “I like to be quite subtle, but this doesn’t call for subtle. The Master is insane.”

And Simm has nothing but fond memories of his time spent on set shooting the adventure, which will mark the end of David Tennant’s tenure as the Tenth Doctor.

“There are moments I’ll cherish forever,” he reminisced. “The best bits about being a screen actor are the moments when the camera is behind you and, as far as the eye can see, you are in that world. There were also moments which were pure Boys’ Own fantasy, but I can’t say what because I don’t want to ruin people’s Christmas!”

Is he capable of portraying a ‘menacing’ Master and not just annoying like he did before? I have no trouble believing all the Doctors are the same person even though they’re all so different but Simm’s version of the Master doesn’t even register to me as possibly being the same being as the versions played by Delgado and Ainley. Derek Jacobi did a better job in the few minutes he had playing the Master (meaning the actual Master and not his Yana persona which was also played very well by him). I think I’m looking forward more to the 11th doc’s new series than the christmas specials. And it ain’t just cos of Amy and her police uniform :P

I never saw any of the old Masters. Mini-discussion then - is/was he really that different? Describe them to me.
