The Weeping Angels return!

December 15th, 2009

weeping-angelsSpeaking on BBC Radio 3’s Night Waves earlier today, Steven Moffat confirmed that one of the monstrous foes the Eleventh Doctor and his companion, Amy Pond, will be facing in the fifth series of Doctor Who are none other than the Weeping Angels, who were first introduced back in Series 3!

The new showrunner announced that the terrifying statues will be back to avenge the Time Lord when the series returns with 13 brand spanking new episodes next year, so you better start practising the art of not blinking!

The writer also revealed that even the epicness of Journey’s End and the upcoming Christmas specials, The End of Time, won’t match up to the scale of one specific Series 5 adventure.

“Don’t assume that we’ve faced the biggest threat yet,” he teased. “I believe we do have a bigger one, which is great.”

The fifth series of Doctor Who is currently be filmed in South Wales, to be broadcast on BBC One and BBC HD from Spring 2010. Stick with us!

At the risk of being unpopular but it’s that cockiness thats putting me off series 5. “Don’t assume that we’ve faced the biggest threat yet,” he teased. “I believe we do have a bigger one, which is great.” he might as well take a massive leak on RTD and DT’s faces

This is great news. I truly believe that Doctor Who is now in the safest hands possible. Moffat is a genius. Any apparent arrogance is purely ironic, in my view. And even if it isn’t, let’s face it, the man’s track record should allow him an amount of arrogance! It’s frustrating to read comments from people already dismissing Matt Smith as the Doctor before he has even appeared on screen. I think he and Moffat will bring us a winning show that may well have a different tone to what has gone before, but that will in no way suffer as a result.

I loved the Weeping Angels and I’m glad they’re coming back! Having said that I hope Moffat doesn’t follow in RTD’s footsteps and constantly bring back characters long after they should have left.
I can’t wait to see season 5! Moffat’s episodes so far have all been genius :]

What’s brilliant is that they are supposed to be returning in one of the most important episodes of Series Five.

I am looking forward to the return of The Weeping Angels and the new Doctor and companion however I dont like Steven’s cockiness. Maybe its just me preferring RTD to SM but it seems like he is saying RTD has done the biggest story he can do, but it will never match up to mine!
Although I do agree Steven is a fantastic writer! :)

The Weeping Angels were one of the most dangerous enemies the 10th Doctor has faced. I think it’s because in reality, the idea of not blinking is almost impossible, blinking is automatic like breathing and like breathing, you can consciously stop yourself but only for a limited time.

What I’ll say about the 11th Doctor is that it is very tempting to write him off already, because if you joined Doctor Who with the 10th Doctor and Rose Tyler, like I did, you wonder how massive changes and a completely new face are gonna feel to you?……….will it ruin it for you to the extent you don’t want to watch anymore?………you don’t know.

I’m very unsure myself. What I will say is that Steven’s stories for the 10th Doctor have been amazing. He’s now in charge, the Weeping Angels offer a line of continuity from my Doctor to the 11th Doctor, which will help the transition.

A lot of people wondered about the change from Tom Baker to Peter Davison, but the show carried on, and brought us some of the best episodes including his swansong The Caves of Androzani.

I know Matt will be brilliant in the role, as was David. Dont think of it as replacing, more a regeneration… cos it is.

Its not an issue with matt taking over that is the problem. My gripe is with stephen moffatt acting arrogant towards his future “finale”, without even knowing if anyone will like episode one of the new series. I just think its really disrespectful to do that to RTD’s legacy of the series. whether anyone wants to hear it or not, rtd brought the series back and follow up series+ specials were commissioned on his first scripts. I know SM is a fantastic writer (his episodes are not my favourites to be honest) but (ive said this before) there is BIG difference between writing one or two great episodes and writing for a full series. Oh and why I’m at it…He’s all for bringing the series back with a blank slate and no past characters from THIS era but is ok to bring back characters from his episodes (River song/Weeping angels)

I hope he and matt prove me wrong cos I love new Who. Its just that arrogance that bothers me. Anyway rant over…roll on 6 days!

I think its great the weeping angels are returning. The episode ‘BLINK’ was left quite open at the end so it was inevitable they were going to be brought back. Although they scared the bubbles out of everyone, they were a fantastic creature that was introduced to doctor who and the episode is most probably going to be written by Steven Moffat(out of the six he’s writing this series) as he wrote the original episode where we first met the angels.

I wonder how they’re gonna be defeated this time because it would be a bit rubbish if they were defeated in the episode ‘BLINK’. I dont think they will though, Moffat’s writing this episode so he probably wont give a same ending. :)
