And Black Spot was stand alone, with a momentary glimpse of something that was not which did not interfere with the actual episode. @Steve

The rest they will learn on the way. And as for missing episodes, there is no excuse for that, ever heard of DVD recorders (for personal use only) and also online. Dr Who is always there to watch, you just need to get out and look for it! @Katie No I disagree, this will tempt new veiwers to look for the past issues and find the show is easily understood fundamentally. Away from Aliens in the UK will certainly gather in more Fans. I think this is going to be an interesting ride! Just looked at the clip, spoilers or no, it looks terrific. Not only has it retained the followers of years past, I'm sixty this year, has been passed down through family to family where the fan base ranges from 60+ to as young as 3. To restrict the yearly episodes to a handfull is wasting the popularity. Commercial television would have milked this Fan base until it was dry, but in doing so the story would be damaged. But the show could easily produce 12 epidoes a season without flogging the horse and would go somewhere towards being able to satisfy the Fans. The popularity of Dr Who clearly demands this and the BBC must be able to see what blind Freddy can see! Please try to rectify the scant numbers of episodes available each year. What makes Doctor Who unique is it's ability to excite the viewer and allows the viewer to watch a great story without being bogged down. At least it did do until SM obsession with Soap Opera, babies and all the other boring things that have over taken the show, From 1963 to 2010 you could watch and enjoy Doctor Who when you wanted. Yes, RTD had a running theme through his entire reign but you did not need to watch all of it to understand it. SM is using Doctor Who, not for his love of the series, but to impress everybody with his supposed cleverness. It is strange that recently, MS best episodes are viewed as the SJA episodes. This will be as close to Doctor Who as Matt Smith will get. I think you forget, "Curse Of The Black Spot" is not a stand a lone story. It has the Bette "Anniversary" Character which runs as part of the ridiculous is she or is she not pregnant (which by the way, did not enhance Doctor Who but just showed SM soap opera mentality!). @TWWL I watch the show and have done for 36 years and I agree with Katie. At some point you have to assume you have an audience and write accordingly, not cater only to those who might, or might not watch that week. @Katie

With RTD's stories you could just watch The Idiots Lantern or The Shakespeare Code without having to know anything about the show, whereas nowadays you have to have watched all of series five and six (more than once!) to understand what's going on. If a random viewer tuned in to see last series finale, they wouldnt have a clue! The problem I have with the Moffat era is that you have to be a dedicated viewer.
