But my bigger question regarding Series 9 has been one of whether or not the half-dozen or so “loose ends” in Clara’s story line would be meaningfully addressed. Here are four of them:
- Missy’s motive for playing matchmaker to The Doctor/Clara;
- Orson Pink, anyone? (or, as I now call him, Orphan Pink);
- How did Clara really survive (or did she?) entering The Doctor’s time stream? Cue River?
- the two hearts on 4-yr-old Clara’s T-shirt when she meets The Doctor for the first time (Rings Of Akhaten), meaning what?
So far, we are 0-for-6, so I’m not holding my breath.
And that really bothers me. Many of us have made a big emotional investment in Clara, and I feel the payoff for watching her (likely) tragic ending should be some sort of closure. For me, it’s about tying off those loose ends. That way, Clara’s story is complete, and we can move on to the next companion’s story.
But now, I feel like the closure I’m looking for probably won’t happen. If so, Clara’s story will never feel complete to me, and I know I’m not alone with this feeling.
So then how DO you say goodbye? How do you trust the storytellers (the writers) with your hopes for the next companion when they come along? Why invest emotionally in a story line when it could be discarded without explanation by next episode? And most importantly, why keep watching?
I honestly don’t know.
