New clip from The Waters of Mars on BBC Breakfast!

October 29th, 2009

the_waters_of_mars_doctor_adelaideAs reported yesterday, Russell T Davies and Elisabeth Sladen appeared on BBC Breakfast this morning to promote this week’s instalment of The Sarah Jane Adventures (part one airs today on BBC1/BBC HD at 4:35PM!), and an unexpected surprise came in the form of a BRAND NEW clip from the next Doctor Who special, The Waters of Mars!

The preview follows on directly from the clip that was released on the official site back in July, and a snippet of it was included in the original teaser trailer seen at the end of Planet of the Dead.

Expect the unexpected…

August 25th, 2009

tenth_doctor_other_tardis_wnDavid Tennant has revealed that he was thrilled when he first read the scripts for his final episodes, and has every confidence that his Doctor’s swansong will live up to - and maybe even exceed - everybody’s expectations.

Speaking to BoingBoing alongside Russell T Davies, the actor joked that he was ultimately worried that the head writer might not be able to live up to the scale of the episode. Naturally, being such a well-loved British icon, the Doctor regenerating is a huge television event, even if you’re not necessarily an avid follower of the show, and it’s safe to say that Russell had a mighty task at hand when the time came for him to pen the Tenth Doctor’s regeneration two-parter. But David acknowledged that the upcoming specials are some of the outgoing showrunner’s finest work to date.

“It was funny because it’s always been my favourite part, when a new script arrives, and you find out where you’re going next,” the actor told the website. “And this is the last one, this has got to be special, y’know? And, what if the inspiration runs out, or what if it can’t quite match the expectation? But I should’ve never have doubted Russell, of course! It was all there, and it’s sad.”

He added: “It’s very exciting, it’s thrilling, and it does new things to the show that haven’t been done before and that’s very exciting. There are revelations that you don’t see coming, and there are just beautiful moments of humanity.”

“There’s some very sustained dialouge scenes,” Russell continued, “between David Tennant and Bernard Cribbins. It’s as big and as strong as all the monsters and spaceships and fighting and explosions, but it’s just two men sitting together - two old men, both as wise as each other, but what do they think about the world, and life, and death?”

Meanwhile, David went on to divulge that the plot for the next special, The Waters of Mars, pushes the boundaries of Saturday night teamtime viewing, admitting that it’s “as down right creepy and gothic as we’d go”. But Russell added that some of the Master’s actions in the Christmas special might just raise a few eyebrows, too…

“Some of the stuff the Master gets up to on Christmas Day is going to be pushing it,” he laughed, before concluding, “I thought we’d push it right towards the end…”

The next special, The Waters of Mars, is due to air in November, with the first part of the Tenth Doctor’s regeneration two-parter transmitting on Christmas Day. It’s thought that his extended final episode, The End of Time, will follow in the New Year. Stick with us!

Preview of final specials in Total TV Guide!

August 11th, 2009

the_waters_of_mars_doctor_adelaideThere’s a preview of the three remaining Doctor Who specials in this week’s edition of Total TV Guide, as the listings magazine takes a look at 2009’s upcoming television highlights, and of course our favourite sci-fi programme is featured as the top telly treat!

Although there’s nothing new mentioned, David Tennant is the issue’s cover star, and it’s nice to see his final episodes being mentioned months before they are actually transmitted - just the way it should be!

And all of this talk makes us think that maybe they aren’t really that far away after all… or is that just us wishful thinking? Saying that, the preview is definitely a reminder that, although we’ve still got quite a wait ahead of us, David’s final episodes will be worth the wait, as the Tenth Doctor encounters zombies on Mars in November, before being forced into a final showdown with his arch-nemesis, the Master, at Christmas…

Check out the preview in this week’s issue of Total TV Guide (15th-21st August 2009), out across the UK now, priced £1!

David: “This Doctor likes being this Doctor”

July 31st, 2009

doctor-discussion-potd-prophecyFollowing on from the debut of the Christmas specials trailer at the San Diego Comic-Con earlier this week, everybody’s talking about what’s in store for the Doctor this festive season (even more so than before!), and the man himself, David Tennant, has spoken about how we’ll see the Time Lord act when he realises his tenth incarnation is close to dying…

“I think this Doctor likes being this Doctor,” he told IGN. “And I think he’s raging against the dying of the light. And I think that’s kind of the beat that we play.”

He added: ”He knows that the sands of time are running out. He’s been told. And the bell is tolling for him, and he doesn’t want to go quietly.”

Meanwhile, outgoing showrunner, Russell T Davies, described the next special, The Waters of Mars, as being “one of those claustrophobic submarine-type dramas, all trapped in an enclosed space with sort of increasing darkness and intensity”. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?

The Waters of Mars will air on BBC One and BBC HD later this year, with the final two specials transmitting on the channels over the Christmas period.
