BBC respond to anti-ginger complaints

January 6th, 2010

eleventh-doctor-regenerationThe BBC have today issued an official statement in response to the controversy Doctor Who has faced following the transmission of part two of The End of Time on New Year’s Day.

A total of 143 viewers have complained that the Eleventh Doctor’s ‘Still not ginger!’ line was irresponsible as it could lead to bullying and also suggests a BBC anti-ginger agenda. However, a spokesperson has reassured audiences that this is definitely not the case, and that it was simply a continuation of the running gag set up in Series 2.

“Doctor Who doesn’t have an anti-ginger agenda whatsoever,” they said. “This was a reprise of the line in the Christmas Invasion episode in 2005, when David Tennant discovers that he’s not ginger, and here he is, missing out again - disappointed he’s still not ginger.”

They added: “In addition, the Doctor’s previous companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) and his new one Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) are both redheads.”

Well of course it’s not anti-ginger. He WANTS to be ginger! How silly is that accusation?

Maybe after Matt they should have Charlie Clements (Bradley from EE) have the new Doctor so they don’t fuss :P

oh for sanity’s sake, clearly all those who complained saw Doctor Who for the first time when the Doctor regenerated into Matt Smith. Everyone else knows that the 10th Doctor, as has been said, was disappointed not to be ginger when he regenerated from the 9th Doctor. So all those people with nothing else to do but complain should feel embarrassed, they essentially complained about an anti-ginger character who wanted to be ginger.

Seriously, I’ve said this a lot, some people just sit by the phone, which has the complaints people on Speed Dial 1, and watch the TV waiting for something to offend them, I’m sure the operators even know these people on a first-name basis by now.

These must be the same 145 who complained about Johnathan Ross and Russell Brand.

Seriously though these people are more thicker than that sheet of ice i had on my window screen.

why do people make up stupid assumptions like that. some people have got problems, they feel like they have to complain about everything. oh well. not everyone sees every side to a joke.

Despite the humour this news story contains, you do have to look at both sides of this story.

For viewers whom did not watch the second series, the ‘line’ would have obviously been random to them, but we have to ask ourselves if the people complaining are actually the people who create the whole ‘its bad to be ginger’ cascade – as by complaining about the line used, they’re actually making a big fuss about something that others properly did not think twice about - however the line ‘Still not ginger’ could have been written in a slightly different way to completely avoid any stupid misinterpretations.

Honestly, I think it’s hard to misinterpret “Still not ginger!” even if you didn’t see the Christmas Invasion.
If he was _excited_ about not being ginger, then people have a point.

But he’s disappointed that his hair isn’t ginger. Therefore, he WANTS to be ginger.
So how in the world did people get offended?

I think the whole Politically Correct Bullying thing has gone way to far. I took it that he was excited about not being Ginger as he seemed to come over excited about everything else! If,as Ez says, he wants to be Ginger, why didn’t he change the colour of his hair? He grew a brand new hand in The Christmas Invasion”. Personally, I believe Matt Smith’s Doctor will be a breath of fresh air and honest, something missing from the 10th Doctor!

    “…and also suggests a BBC anti-ginger agenda”

I think that the complaint suggests an anti-English-comprehension agenda on behalf of the ginger parents.
