James Corden set to appear in Series 5?

February 22nd, 2010

james-cordenAccording to an article from The Sun newspaper today, the BBC have cast James Corden to appear in the upcoming fifth series of Doctor Who.

The report suggests that the actor, best known for his role as Smithy in Gavin & Stacey, was recently spotted on a train to Cardiff reading over his scripts for the episode.

“We normally keep our guest stars under wraps but you can’t hide a bloke like James,” an insider said. “And now he’s not coming to Wales for Gavin And Stacey any more, it’s pretty obvious why he is here.”

They added: “He’s a great actor and he’ll be a perfect fit for the new Doctor Who.” Stay tuned!

There’s a hundred reasons he could have gone to Cardiff! And although I love James Corden, I hope this isn’t true. I’m not fond of the times when DW has brought in comedians, e.g. Peter Kay or even Lee Evans, whose role seemed to be halfway between minor and exaggerated.

Of course, as I keep saying, this is only an opinion based on no evidence, and I’ve never seen James Corden doing anything other than comedy, so maybe all my preconceptions are entirely unfair.

I’d agree though, I too haven’t really appreciated it when comedians have guest starred on Doctor Who and would agree that their performances were supposed to be amusing but most often weren’t, and in the case of Peter Kay, definitely exaggerated and I hope we never see the inhabitants of Clom again, lol.

At the same time, assuming his information is right and not some random speculation cos someone happened to be going to Wales, if the part was a decent one, then I’d be willing to give it a chance and see what happens, I won’t rule him out yet for being a comedic actor either.

This seems like it could easily be another failure like Peter Kay was. Comic actors in general don’t work in Who, Lee Evans being the exception that proves the rule.

Outpost Gallifrey said that the Sun said (blimey, this is like Chinese Whispers) that Mr Corden confirmed the news when approached by a fan. I guess that makes the Sun’s claim slightly more substantiated than normal.

This should be really good! but, like TSG said, he could be there for a number of reasons… but… if not done properly… it could be a mess…
