Episode one of the long-awaited Adventure Games, City of the Daleks, is now available to download for PC on the official website – 3 days before its scheduled release!

It was updated on the site yesterday evening, however we just wanted to make sure that it wasn’t a temporary error on the BBC’s behalf before we reported the news ourselves. The early release has, naturally, spread through fandom like wildfire, and the link is very much still active – so it’s too late to turn back now!

You can download the brand new game in all its glory by clicking this link, where you can also watch an exciting video introduction from Karen Gillan. The Mac version of the game will be released on June 15th (or maybe a few days earlier if lightning strikes twice!), and the official site promises that non-UK fans will be able to play when a commercial version of the game is released internationally next month.

Thanks to everybody who wrote in with the news. We weren’t ignoring you - we just wanted to verify what was going on before we posted!

CALLING ALL WHOVIANS!
What did you think of City of the Daleks? Let us know by writing your own reviews, either in the comments below or via email, and later this month we’ll compile a selection of the best ones for our forthcoming Adventure Games guide! What did you love? What did you hate? Was it too easy? Too hard? Too slow? Let us know!

    Not very happy that the games aren’t being made available for free internationally, especially with all the advance publicity saying it would be. I’m probably just going to ignore them now, especially if it ends up that we have to pay for each one.

    Downloaded it yesterday, completed it today.

    I think I’m going to send Whoviannet a review, I doubt many members of this community will like it though, lol…….I do have some positives to say about it, I will just air my views on the negative side of things too.

    Well, not being a very good gamer, I’ve only just reached Skaro. But already I’m quite annoyed with the jerky graphics which never match up to the sound, the constant overly dramatic music and the fact that the mouse movements are so jerky that I’ve killed both characters more times than the Master’s come back to life. The controls are all very slow to respond, if indeed they do respond.

    But there’s a TARDIS on my desktop! How cool is that?

    Alex – Well, seeing as we pay the BBC license fee, and you don’t, I don’t see it being much of a problem…

    I had this problem too but if you go to the options panel and change your graphics quality to medium it is resolved and the graphics surprisingly look even better. This comes in handy with some future puzzles you will meet on Skaro.

    Pete – Seeing as the BBC likes to tease us with things like BBC America and BBC Radio 1 on my radio, I think it is a problem that they don’t make certain things available internationally. Especially when it is openly publicized to us.

    I think the game should be console based instead of a computer game. As for the grips about international having to pay, well, TOUGH! We have to pay through our TV licence, which we are bullied into as we can not watch any TV without it. So getting something back other than tedious reality tv like Over the bloody rainbow etc balances out your having to pay for it.

    Failing that, campaign to get the whole game system onto something like PS or XBox!

    Because we don’t have to pay for decent television? Not to mention how much more one has to pay in order to receive BBC America. At least for me, anyways. It’s ridiculously expensive.

    @Caroline
    There is a hell of a lot more decent tv in america than on UK tv. We are force feed some much reality tv that drama falls by the wayside these days. The BBC are guilty of so much wastage off the licence fee here. It is being diverted into building projects etc. Why do you thin the BBC cut the series last year to 4 episodes? You may have a lot of adverts in your programming but I would rather watch Damages with Glenn Close than over the Rainbow with Graham yawn Norton!

    Ah, come on. Graham Norton’s harmless.

    *Remembers Nortongate parts 1 and 2*

    Forget I said anything.

    Is that the resolution? I’m computer illiterate, me. I can use ‘em, but not tinker with ‘em.

    Not at all happy with this. i cannot appreciate this due to the lag. maybe its just me with my slow computer but i just had to give up as it took ages to get it started, then i couldn’t be asked to wait for the video to catch up with the sound.

    The show being cut to the specials last year had nothing to do with money. The BBC actually lost potential revenue by agreeing to only do the specials.

    @Steve
    I will agree that we have more to watch over here, if you pay for it. And there is so much reality TV it’s ridiculous, but we do have many more options as well. Damages? I haven’t even heard of that show. haha. There is just so much junk on the TV these days that it’s near impossible to keep up with something that’s good. And most of our shows are put up on the internet by the networks for anybody to watch for free and BBC should do the same. Also, I have never watched a show or listened to the radio without there being commercials. You’re lucky that they don’t interrupt your shows and such. And BBC has to making some money from the people who have a cable bill into the hundreds of dollars a month to receive channels like BBC America. So, they should let us use their services as well.

    @TWWL
    Exactly, the specials were mainly RTD’s idea.

    Getting back on topic: I’m debating whether or not to download this. While the gameplay did look good in DWC 5.5, I’m not that impressed by the graphic design. In my personal opinion, they should have opted to go with Flash/Illustrator-created graphics. Not hard to turn 2D to 3D, really. Also, Flash and Illustrator produce much better graphics (excl. The Infinite Quest…)

    And that’s the kind of attitude that wins you (by “you” I’m being global here referring to people who use the outdated licence fee excuse, not “you” specifically) win few friends. If the licence fee is all powerful why are we able to view BBC News worldwide? It’s inexcusable that the BBC made no mention of this in all of its publicity for the game. Plus, I take it you enjoy the idea of people paying $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 or whatever the hell they are going to charge for a game people in the UK are reporting is a) buggy as hell and b) can be finished in a single sitting.

    @TWWL Really. And pray tell, what happened to the 13 episodes of Torchwood which was hacked down to 5, much to the casts disgust?
    The BBC wanted to save money because investment was need for their “empire building” (a quote directly from the BBC trust) and both DT and RTD wanted to do other things.

    Thanks for sharing those details, however we cannot endorse downloading it in that manner.

    For all of you having jerky graphic problems, I’ve got something that might help. Go to options, set the graphics and screen resolution a notch or two lower, and simply restart the game! It worked for me, and I hardly noticed a difference graphic-wise, so I think that doing that should do the trick.
