The BBC Press Office has today released the official synopsis for Episode 4 of the new series, The Doctor’s Wife, which will air on BBC One on Saturday 14th May (time to be confirmed).

The episode is written by Neil Gaiman, directed by Richard Clark and guest stars Surrane Jones as Idris, a character “who may turn out to be an old acquaintance of the Doctor’s with a new face”. Elizabeth Berrington and Adrian Schiller also appear as Auntie and Uncle.

The Doctor receives a distress signal from an old friend. Could there be another living Time Lord out there? Hopes raised, he follows the signal to a junkyard planet sitting upon a mysterious asteroid in a Bubble universe, populated by a very strange family.

The Doctor, Amy and Rory are given the warmest of welcomes by Auntie, Uncle and Nephew. But the beautiful and insane Idris greets them in a more unusual fashion – what is she trying to tell the Doctor? As the Doctor investigates, he unwittingly puts his friends in the gravest danger.

I doubt it’s Jenny. She wasn’t fully Time Lord, and when she regenerated she didn’t change her appearance.

My hope is that it’s Romana, but I won’t hold my breath for that.

That’s… interesting. And… it couldn’t be Susan, could it? The junkyard planet seems a little… prophetic.

    Lots of ellipses. I’m intrigued.

What’s really interesting is how the Press Office states the episode is a hour long, rather than just saying “Time to be confirmed” as with everything else…?

Not really interessting as the past 3 episodes have all been listed as an hour from 6-7pm until the final schedules were released so i wouldn’t read too much into it as they’ve all turned out to be 45 minutes. Anyway hasn’t neil said the episode is 45 minutes?

Before the final schedules were confirmed, the past three episodes were all listed as “Time to be confirmed”, but this is the only one which hasn’t. Also, no-one has said what the length of any episode is.

Romana, short for Romanadvoratrelundar, is a fictional character in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who. She is a Time Lady from the planet Gallifrey, and she was a companion of the Fourth Doctor. Because she was a Time Lord, Romana was able to regenerate, having two on-screen incarnations with somewhat different personalities (called Romana I and Romana II by fans). Romana I was played by Mary Tamm from 1978 to 1979. When she became pregnant and chose not to return for another series, the part was recast. Romana II was played by Lalla Ward from 1979 to 1981.

It may well be Romana. Of course, it may well not be, no point in pretending you know for sure.

I’m really looking forward to this one, as a fan of Gaiman; I’m really surprised more high profile sci-fi and fantasy writers haven’t written an episode yet.

That synopsis makes the episode sound so “Classic” Who.

I’m really curious and looking forward to seeing what Gaiman has come up with.

She wasn’t the only Time Lady to appear in the classic series. Us “Doctor newbies” are quite justified in looking at several possibilities.

I would like to see it be Romana, though.

I really hope Romana comes back! She was one of favorite companions.
However, the reference to the “junkyard planet” seems rather reminiscent of Susan Foreman O___o Perhaps we’ll see a return of the Doctor’s granddaughter?

I was thinking that we see river kiss the doctor but idris is apparently the doctors’ wife so what if river and idris are the same person? it will make sense and fits in with what has already happened with the doctor and river :)

Perhaps its actually the TARDIS that’s the Doctor’s wife. She has been with him longer than any other female, human or otherwise. ;)

I like this!! The TARDIS needs her own storyline at some point.
