Karen lifts the lid on her fame, filming and fan mail
The Indepedent has a new feature interview with Karen Gillan, in which she discusses various Doctor Who related topics including fame, filming and fan mail!
Regarding the media interest surrounding her, she admits: “I have no sense of being famous – you’re just working. And then you’ll have a random day in London when you’ll do some press and it creeps into your awareness that this goes out – that what you do every day goes out to televisions right across the country. I just forget.”
She adds: “Filming the show becomes your life in a way and I really worry that I don’t have anything else to talk about. Everything’s Doctor Who. We don’t have a social life, because you can’t. I watch stuff on YouTube every night – that’s what I do in the hour that we have between filming and looking forward to our houmous and Nairn’s oatcakes. That’s what Matt and I have in the evenings… it’s depressing.”
Commenting on her fan mail, she revealed: “Generally it’s from young girls and… some older men. There’s one guy who sends a postcard from every single place he goes to, and he travels quite consistently, so I’ve got this update of his travels, which is nice…”
The new series continues tonight with The Curse of the Black Spot at 6:15pm, BBC1.
Does anyone actually know what her fan mail adress is?
Has anyone noticed that she always says me and Matt, instead of me, Matt and Arthur. Does he not have as many scenes?
Nice interview. I find Karen adorable, which sounds perhaps a little patronising, but I don’t mean it like that. I mean that she has such a cheerful outlook! You see her on Confidential telling people to look at her pirate coat, because it swishes, and the word that springs to mind is adorable. She’s having fun. She’s so open, and so refreshing in a world where people censor themselves so much.
